Mark Dodson’s legacy
Fans of science fiction and fantasy films of the 1980s have likely heard Dodson’s voice, even if they don’t realize it. In 1983, Dodson made his big screen debut in “Star Wars: Return of the Jedi,” in which he voiced the monkey-like pet sidekick of Jabba the Hutt, Salacious Crumb. The character quickly became a darkly humorous fan favorite. The following year, he voiced most of the Mogwai in 1984’s “Gremlins.”
Forty years of voice acting work followed. Other notable work includes voicing zombies in George Romero’s “Day of the Dead,” providing voices for “Ewoks: The Battle for Endor” and “Gremlins 2: The New Batch,” and performing in a wide array of video games, including “Star Trek Online,” “Neverwinter,” and “Grim Legends 3: The Dark City.”
Dodson was a staple of the convention scene, appearing at fan gatherings across the country and frequently showcasing his talents for them. He is survived by his daughter, Ciara, and his grandchildren.
