Sandra Milo (1933–2024), star of Fellini’s 8½

by Eric San Juan

Sandra Milo was an Italian actress best known for her roles in Federico Fellini’s (1920– 1993) “8½” and “Juliet of the Spirits,” both of which won Nastro d’Argento for Best Supporting Actress awards.

Sandra Milo’s legacy

Born in French Tunisia, Milo made her screen debut in the 1950s and often appeared in Italian comedies. She performed in two films for acclaimed Italian neo-realist director Roberto Rossellini (1906–1977), “Il Generale Della Rovere” and “Vanina Vanini,” before briefly retiring from acting. However, when she met Federico Fellini in 1963, he convinced her to make a comeback.

Milo appeared in two Fellini films, 1965’s “Juliet of the Spirits,” and most notably, 1963’s “8½,” widely considered one of the most influential films of its era. The picture won Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Costume Design, among three other nominations, and Milo won the Nastro d’Argento for Best Supporting Actress for both of her cinematic collaborations with Fellini.

After working with Fellini, Milo once again largely retired from the big screen, although she appeared in a few small films and had many roles on television in the years that followed, including stints as a TV show host. She also released a series of music singles in the 1980s, culminating in an album, “Voyages Extraordinaires,” in 2018. In 2021, she was honored with the David di Donatello Lifetime Achievement Award.
