NHL stardom
Hawerchuk played hockey all his life, having received his first pair of ice skates when he was two years old. At 18, he joined the NHL as the first overall pick of the 1981 draft, chosen by the Winnipeg Jets. Hawerchuk played for the Jets for nine seasons, becoming a star of the NHL who is ranked among the greats of the 1980s alongside the likes of Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey. In his rookie season, Hawerchuk became the youngest NHL player in history to score 100 points, and he was awarded the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie. Traded to the Sabres in 1990, he played four seasons there before brief stints with the Blues and the Flyers. After his 1997 retirement, Hawerchuk coached the Barrie Colts. Though he never won a Stanley Cup, Hawerchuk made it to the finals with the Flyers in 1997, and he played for Team Canada in the 1987 Canada Cup. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001.
