Steven Schmelz Obituary

Steven James Schmelz

Monmouth Beach - Steven James Schmelz, 63, of Monmouth Beach, NJ, passed away 2 years after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. He never lost hope despite his diagnosis and lived every day to the fullest. His resolve will always be remembered.

Steven grew up in Roselle Park, where he starred on the high school basketball team. He selected Bates College in Lewiston, ME, where he was named captain of the basketball team. Steven graduated in 1979 and married his loving wife, Heidi, that same year. Steven founded Sea View Jeep and after 37 years of compassionate leadership, his business reflects employee dedication and customer loyalty. He has also been the owner of Sea Breeze Ford since 2006.

Whether you called him Steve, Dad, Boss, Coach, Uncle Steve, or G-Pa, you knew him as an honest and loyal friend - always putting the needs of others before his own. Steven gifted these values to his children, Kristina, Tyler, Tony, and Anabel. He dedicated his life to his family - coaching nearly all of their sports teams and impacting the lives of countless others.

Steve loved sports, from driving to Shea Stadium to watch the Jets with his dad, to taking the train to the Garden, to the countless tailgates at the Meadowlands and in the Bronx. Steve loved attending a big game with friends. Steve also coached and played in the Jersey Shore Basketball League for over 30 years.

Steven loved skiing, bike rides, Long Beach Island, his children and his grandchildren. His family asks that you think of him when you are enjoying these things with your loved ones. In addition to his wife and 4 children, Steven is survived by six grandchildren Ryerson Schmelz; Michael, Nathaniel and Eliza Farissier; and Wyatt and Theo Schmelz; his brother William John Schmelz and his sisters Johanne Kittle and Judy Todd.

There will be a private service for his family at the Church of the Precious Blood. His family will plan a public memorial service this Spring. If you would like to make a donation in memory of Steven please send a check including Steven's name to Fulfill at 3300 Route 66, Neptune, NJ 07753 or make a donation online at https://fulfillnj.fenly.org/stevenjschmelz. Sea View Jeep and Sea Breeze Ford will match all donations.

I coached soccer at the same time Steve was a Peninsula SC coach and he was his players loved Steve. When one of our PSC officer's son was stricken with a debilitating disease, Steve took care of that family and help to provide a car for that family. He was a generous man and I will never forget him.

I first met Steve when we were soccer coaches for Peninsula Soccer Club. He was the voice of reason as the club was expanding and he always did what was right for the kids. When our club treasurer's son became disabled, Steve stepped up to help with a vehicle. He was a big hearted person and we were all blessed to call him our friend.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Steve on an automotive project with his Jeep dealership just a few years ago and was very impressed with his humility and humanity. He was a pleasure to engage in conversation and his passing is truly sorrowful. May he rest in peace for eternity. Condolences to his family and many friends.

I knew Steve from kindergarten days . He and I went to high school together and sat next to me in probability and statistics at Roselle Park high school. What a great guy he was. He loved
Basketball and sports. Glad he found success with the auto business and raised a nice family. He was part of my youth and growing up and part of many other people's lives in a positive way later on. We will miss him.

I've known Steve as a close, personal friend through the Oceanport-Monmouth Beach Basketball program. He is the one person I've known in life who you could not say one bad word about. He was kind and generous with his time. We worked collaboratively to build a strong local basketball program. He coached my son in baseball and was fair and supportive to everyone. I shall miss him greatly. Rest in peace, friend.

I was a freshman at RPHS in 1973 and due to the new title IX was allowed to play on the boys varsity tennis team where Steve played. He always had a brand new Ford & carted us around town- what happy & fun memories! Steve was always ready to help anyone & a true friend! I am truly shocked & saddened by Steve’s passing!
