Gregory Oliver Obituary

Family-Placed Death Notice

OLIVER, Gregory GREGORY JEROME OLIVER Gregory Jerome Oliver of Marietta was born on May 14, 1931 in Woodbury, New Jersey, the son of the late Jerome Oliver and Rene Hill, and departed this life on July 26, 2012. After college at the University of Missouri, Greg served in the US Army as a war correspondent during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, he began a career of more than 50 years in radio, television and film, beginning at CBS and then ABC. Greg moved from Washington D.C. to Atlanta to anchor the Channel 11 nightly news for several years. He then began his career as a free-lance talent with Atlanta Models & Talent where he was recognized for his unique "velvety" voice; for years, travelers though Atlanta's airport have heard Greg's announcement: "You are now entering the transportation mall." Among Greg's notable accounts over the years were Delta Air Lines, Firestone Tires, Bush Beer, Chevrolet, the Atlanta Flames, Dodge and Orkin. Greg was an avid golfer, loved to travel and was devoted to his family and many friends. Greg is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jean Brooks Oliver, and: daughter Michelle Oliver Beard, her husband Johnny and grandson, Stefan Nordstrom, of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina; son Mark Oliver of Conifer, Colorado, granddaughter, Ashleigh Lorch, her husband Erwin and great grandson Oliver Lorch of Thornton, Colorado; daughter Monique Oliver Connolly, her husband William, grandson James Connolly and great granddaughter Meeghan Connolly of Wichita, Kansas; grandson Christopher Connolly, great grandson Shai Connolly and great granddaughter Joey Connolly, of Flagstaff, Arizona; daughter Marlowe Oliver Haga, her husband Michael, and grandsons Tyler Haga and Dylan Haga, of Evergreen, Colorado. Son, Morgan Oliver of Tuscon, Arizona, predeceased Greg. Also surviving are: stepson Peter Glass, his wife Dee, and step granddaughter, Brooks Glass, of Atlanta and step granddaughter Deedee Glass of Santa Monica, California; stepson Major Richard Glass, his wife Debbie, of Cumming, step granddaughters Melissa Glass and Callie Matthews of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Stephen Glass of Cumming; step son Michael Glass of Atlanta, and step daughter Meg Prince, her husband George, step grand daughter Elizabeth Prince and step grandson Brinson Prince. A memorial service will be held at Saint Lukes Episcopal Church, 435 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 at 1:00 pm, followed by a reception at the Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the youth programs of the Screen Actors Guild, sagfounda tion.org or a favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of SouthCare Cremation and Funeral Society of Marietta. 770-420-5557.

I guess memory late is better than never. My parents, siblings and I enjoyed many a day with he and his family when they resided in the Washington, DC area. We fell out of touch when he and the family moved to Atlanta, but the good memories have persisted to this day. Rest in peace.

My first introduction into the studio and audio business was being invited by Greg to go up to WKLS while he did the news, live on the air. WKLS FM was an automated station at that time. We walked in, Greg tore this onion skin paper off of something that looked like a teletype machine, we went into a booth about the size of a phone booth, Greg flipped a toggle switch, the automated music and commercial ad systen stopped, then out came this incredible voice of authority delivering the news. I was totally impressed. That experience is part of what molded the businesses I'm in today. Thanks Greg

A casting director once screamed, "I want he voice of GOD!!" We looked around at each other. Clearly, God was not available for this particular gig. We gave quietly inquisitive faces. Someone finally said, "Sir. God, God?" the casting director replied, "Yes. GOD! Gregg Oliver, Damnit!!"

"You are now entering the Pearly Gates". G.O. D.

Dear Jean and Family, Though Greg is gone, he left us with a wonderful lifetime of memories. Kathy and I feel so fortunate to have spent time with you and Greg over the years. From our AFN Reunions, to teeing it up at Indian Hills, to telling stories at auditions, life with Greg was always a barrel of fun and always exciting because we never knew what would happen next. I believe he "sent me to my room" more than anyone in my family ever did! He was fun, caring, and unique. He was a character and he had character. He was caring and he was cared about by all of his friends. Yes, we surely will miss him, but please know that we will always remember Greg...and you... with great fondness! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Several years ago I wrote a radio spot for the Red Cross and felt a little anxious about whether I could pull off the concept. The goal was to get more blood donors without alienating current blood donors--as nearly 100% are Christians engaged in the very Christ-like act of sacrificing their own blood to save others. Greg Oliver was the voice talent, and he immediately understood what I wanted and added so much more--because he is a Christian. I know he will spend eternity at peace with his Creator. He brought that spot to life beyond what I envisioned. Some time later I heard his sample voice reel and heard part of that Red Cross spot. I have felt honored ever since. What a great guy. He made this world a better place. God bless him and all his wonderful family. Follow his example, and you will certainly see him again.

Jean! I am so, so sorry to hear this news. You and Greg were on my mind just last week. I wish I'd followed my intuition and called. It had been so long; I guess I let being embarrassed about not calling for such a long time get in the way. Pride took away a chance to say goodbye, and I am sorry for that. You and Greg were so, so kind to me and I am grateful for your helping me get started in Atlanta. Wish I'd known about the memorial service yesterday. I would have been there. Will reach out to you.
