Charles Rehling Obituary

Mr. Charles G. Rehling of Surprise, Arizona, passed away in Phoenix on August 29, 2005 after an extended illness. Charles was born on August 31, 1921, in Davenport, Iowa, to Frank and Gertrude Rehling. He married Barbara Ann Bates of Davenport on December 13, 1947. Chuck, as he was known by all, served in the U.S. Army November 1942 to March 1946 as an agent of
an Army Intelligence Unit. He returned to Iowa Law School in 1946 and graduated with a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree in August 1947, and was admitted to the Iowa Bar in October 1947. He practiced law in the Davenport firm of Doerr, Dower, and Rehling, and, later, Rehling, Lindburg, Gosma, and Noyes before retiring to Arizona in 1993. Mr. Rehling was quite active in politics and state and local government affairs, holding positions as Assistant Scott County Attorney, 1948-1953; Scott County Attorney, 1953-55; Judge 7th Judicial District, State of Iowa, 1955-57; Scott County Bar Association (President, 1967-68); Iowa State Bar (Member, Judicial Administration Committee, 1961-1964); Member, State Judicial Qualifications Committee, 1974-1982; Chairman, Scott County Republicans; and was the first Chairman of the Campaign Finance Disclosure Commission, State of Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann; his sister, Jacqueline Smith of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and her family; his daughter, Barbara and her husband, Michael Noyes of Davenport, Iowa; his son, Charles G. Rehling II, and his wife, Julie, of Phoenix, Arizona; his daughter, Nancy Rehling Welde, of Phoenix, Arizona; his son, John H. Rehling and his wife, Kathy, of Phoenix, Arizona; his son, Samuel D. Rehling of Phoenix, Arizona; and his 10 grandchildren. Chuck enjoyed family and golf greatly, and will always be remembered by his family and many friends for his wit, humor, and great compassion for others. Local services will be held for family members only. A reception will be held at the home of John and Kathy Rehling following the services for family and friends. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Scott County, Iowa, Cancer Society or the Vera French Mental Health Center of Davenport, Iowa.

Family gatherings were often at Ann and Chuck's house, and Uncle Chuck would try to get all his nieces, nephews, and children to dance to the music. He was always so much fun and gave us many happy memories.
