Thomas Agnos Obituary

Thomas J. Agnos Thomas J. Agnos, born in Lima, Ohio, in 1936, died on December 20, 2004, in Sun City West, Arizona after a brief but painful battle with cancer. Arriving in Arizona to join the Phoenix Police Department in 1961, Tom had served in the U.S. Air Force. He served with the Phoenix Police Department for 27 years, retiring in 1988 as an Assistant Chief. Tom was elected to the office of Sheriff of Maricopa County in 1989, a post he held to 1993. A graduate of Phoenix College and ASU, Tom was a cop's cop-a man of professionalism, integrity and sincerity, with a concern for others and a pride in his profession, all of which earned him the respect of Arizona's law enforcement community. Tom had a clear sense of responsibility and a loyalty to those who worked with him. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Shirley, of Sun City West, his brother Richard, of Washington State, and three nephews, Phillip in Ohio, Jim and Mike in California. He was preceded in death by his brother William who is survived by his wife Dorothy, in Ohio. Additionally, a godson, Michael Martinez, resides in Phoenix. Tom also is survived by Shirley's brother and sister-in-law, Alan and Lucy Henderson in Prescott and by many nieces and nephews in Ohio, Georgia and Alaska. A very special niece and her two sons, Carol, Michael and Gregory Juneau all live in Texas. Together, Tom and Shirley shared a strong concern for community and a genuine sense of caring for the people throughout Arizona, as well as a love of their home in Northern California, golf, travel and music. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on January 5 at the FOP Lodge at 19th Avenue and Sweetwater. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Sun Health Foundation for their Research Institute, ASU Foundation for the Cancer Research Institute, or the U of A Foundation for the Arizona Cancer Center.
