James Hunter Obituary

James E. Hunter was born in Silsbee, Texas, March 8, 1954. His parents, Artis Hunter and Geneva Land Bailey, preceded him in death. He accepted Christ in his life and joined John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church. There he was a member of the Trustee Board, co-chair of the Boys 2 Men Youth Mentor Program, an active member of Sunday school, and chair-person of the Golf Committee. James graduated from Silsbee High School, where he became an All-State and All-American athlete and was later inducted into the Silsbee High School Wall of Fame. Upon graduating from high school, the greatest coach in football history Eddie Robinson, convinced James to attend (on a full football scholarship) Grambling State University. With 26 career interceptions, he ranks No. 2 all-time in Grambling history and in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). He also set a school record with four touchdowns on punt returns. James was honored as the Best All-Around Player for Grambling in 1974, 1975 and 1976. During his junior year he earned seven All-American honors from different organizations and he was named to the Black College All-American Team by the Mutual Black Network in 1974. He later received the ultimate honor from his conference as he was inducted into the Southwestern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame. After receiving his Bachelor's degree from Grambling State University, he became the number No.1 first-round draft pick of the Detroit Lions in 1976 and started at free safety. Nicknamed Hound Dog for his long-striding running ability, James made an instant impact in the National Football League (NFL). The 6-foot-2, 195-pound cornerback led the Lions with seven pass interceptions and was a runner-up as NFL Rookie Defensive Player of the Year. James made his transition to eternal life during the early morning of Monday, August 2, 2010. He shall always be remembered as a consummate professional - on and off the field. He made a significant impact on the field and in the community, as a businessman, a husband, a father and a grandfather. James' generous nature, big smile and warm personality earned fans and friends in Detroit. Throughout his Lions' career and beyond, he was involved in a variety of charitable activities. He was a lifelong member of the NAACP, an active member of Omicron Alpha Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and was known for his philanthropic efforts. James Hunter's legacy will continue to flow through his loving wife of thirty-three years, Emmalene, his son Javin, his daughter Marisa; his grandchildren Jaden, Jodan, and Hunter; his sisters, Mona Simpson and Kathy Lee (Martin); his sister-In-law, Jean Jarrett and Evelyn Hunter; and his away from home mother in Detroit, Gloria Hendrieth; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, family and friends. Funeral Service will be Saturday August 7, 2010. Visitation from 9AM until funeral 11AM at Silsbee High School Auditorium. Interment in Kirby Cemetery.

I knew Hunter from Grambling. I had not seen him since that time. I heard of his passing and became curious about the type of person he became. I was happy to find out that the traits mentioned by so many are the same positive traits I remember him possessing all of those years ago. God be with his family.

I went to school with James, he was several grades behind me, but I remember watching him play football in Silsbee. He was always such a nice guy and never boastful of his abilites or accomplishments. My prayers go out to the Hunter family; may God's peace surround you during this difficult time. We look forward to seeing James again one day very soon.

James Hunter was one of my heroes, and he was younger than myself. He went on to achieve his life gift and purpose and I applaud him for that. May he rest in peace

I had no idea that James's services were going to be in Silsbee. I regret not being there to pay my last respects.

James was like a big brother and kept a protective eye on me. We knew he would go places.

To the Hunter family, stay strong adn be encouraged...we will see him again in Glory.

Remember, Ps 46:1..."the Lord is our refuge and strength; an ever present help in trouble...."

I never shook James E. Hunter hand but he made a impact on my life like no other athlete have. I watch Mr. Hunter score over 70 point during a basketball in Liberty Texas. James was the greatest athlete I have ever seen playing any sport. I have seen many world record set in track and field and I have attended several Super Bowl and a few World Series and a few Final Four Basketball Game He was the ( G.O.A.T. ) Greatest Of All TIME

To The Hunter Family

Our Love and Prayers are with your Family and Remember Joy Cometh In The Morning, Lean on the Lord, He will give you strength.
James will truly be missed but God loved him more and called him home, now he is with the Lord, family, G- Men and Friends. We were classmates at Grambling and George and Linda Guidry and I brought him home a couple of times and if you knew James and George they were opposites but the best of friends and James kept you laughing and always full of life and fun, again he will be missed.

Love from Faye Jefferson- Perry and George Guidry Families

Words cannot even express the sadness that is felt in this loss. I say to myself--how can such a pillar of progress just cease living, how can one who is in the prime of life & family "give up the ghost", how can one who was strong and so athletically inclined not have that strength anymore--God, who is the Author and Finisher of our faith knows best and He always has a plan! We say, "why James", God says, "Why not James, My good and faithful servant; it's time for him to be heaven's gain and 'all star athlete'."
To the family, "To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord and precious in His sight is the death of one of His saints." James will be missed; yet, his legacy of love and kindness will last forever in those lives that he touched. Gone but never to be forgotten! Cherish the memories!
With much love & heartfelt sympathies,

Do Not Stand And Weep
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there.
I do not sleep

I am a thousand winds that swiftly blow.
I am the diamond glint
on newly fallen snow.
I am the sunlight
on ripened grain.
I am the soft and gentle autumn rain

When you wake from sleep in the early morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft, starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there.
I do not sleep.
