WILLIAM HOMMEL Obituary

HOMMEL, William J., Sr. 89, of Canton, formerly of West Roxbury, died peacefully at home October 23, 2016. The son of Alfred and Helen, he was the youngest of six children. A proud Marine Corps and WW II veteran, he also owned Joseph L. Cronin Cap and Gown Company with his wife. A metallurgist for many years, he was the devoted husband to the late Joan T. Hommel (McDonough) for 68 years. Loving father of Edward W. Hommel and his wife Bella of Nova Scotia, John G. Hommel and his wife Valerie of Boston, Nancy M. Donoghue and her husband Daniel of N. Weymouth, William J. Hommel Jr. and his wife Virginia of Medway, Marybeth Bradley and her husband George of Weymouth, and Rita T. Amico and her husband Edward of Canton. He was a loving Grandfather of 10 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Spending summers at the cottage in Pemberton with family and friends was his favorite time of the year. Visiting hours in the Pushard Family Funeral Home, 210 Sherman St., CANTON, Thursday from 4-8 PM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Gerard Majella Church, 1860 Washington St., Canton, Friday at 10:30 AM. Interment Canton Corner Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Healing and Restoration Ministry, 1545 Tremont St., Roxbury, MA 02120.

Bill Hommel was a wonderful man with a terrific smile and a 'twinkle' in his eye! His warmth and genuine caring always came through. He raised a lovely family and he and Joan had a beautiful relationship. They will be missed.

From the moment we started going to Father McDonough's Healing Services, me and my children became a part of the Hommel/McDonough family! We were included in all the holidays and they became our family as we had no family in this country!
We are from Ireland and we fit in beautifully with this very warm loving Irish family who took us under their wings. Sister Priscilla, Joan, Bill and the extended family made us welcome at all times. I spent so many happy times with Joan and I knew Bill could never go on without her. They were a dedicated loving pair and I always called them "Darby and Joan!" They were fortunate to have a marriage everyone hopes to have but few obtain! Now, they are together in Heaven,starting a new life together with the rest of the family. They were goodness personified and our loss is God's gain! Farewell my friends, you will not be forgotten! Much love Fran, Lorna, Louis & Yvonne Gunning.

I loved and adored my Uncle Billy so much....I remember as a child witnessing his wedding to Aunt Joan as my mother sang Panis Angelicus, with my sister Kathy in utero and my father by my side.
