I stumbled upon Zygmund Jankowski's obituary this evening and it was a stab to the heart. Back in the early 70s Ziggy was the artist who set the standard of excellence for up and coming artists in North Central Indiana. I was a young would-be photographer back then and I remember hoping I'd one day capture on photo-paper what Mr. Jankowski managed to capture through his talent. His paintings told stories and evoked emotion. An amazing man whose legacy will stand the test of time has passed. Rest in Peace, sir.

To Zyg's family and friends, I offer my deepest sympathy. For over 30 yrs. Zygmund was my mentor and my trusted friend. He taught me to paint, and I am forever grateful to him. What an incredible gift Zygmund had as a powerful painter and teacher. I am thankful for the time he had to share his gifts with all of us– to be an exemplary artist, an art mentor and father figure to so many; to have touched so many lives along his journey. Thanks Zyg for leaving a legacy in your beautiful works of art, and for believing in us all. We who remain will "keep the faith."

Zyg's spirit lives in all those he brought light to. He certainly did this for me as a great uncle, fellow artist and teacher. My next painting is in honer of your bright light.

Fond memories of my Uncle Zyg,...as a child he called me 'Pula',& he taught me how to enjoy my scrambled eggs with ketchup when I was a fussy eater. Although I'm not an artist myself, he taught me to believe in myself when I cried because I didn't think I could draw. Now I just try to comfort my mother who was his 'wombmate' as he would refer to her in letters or geeting cards. He is dearly missed, and rightfully so. A very unselfish man, with an eye for beauty.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Zyg Jankowski. He was a wonderful inspiration and a fine artist. His memory will live on in all of his fabulous paintings and art work. We have several of his paintings and one was a gift from Zyg himself, I will always treasure it! May his memory be a blessing.

Excerpt from a Poem to Zygmund, Spring 1982
THE WORKSHOP
An Apprentice in awe of this Master's each stance.
Brush in hand, moving with beauty and pure elegance.
The spell that you bound with your drama and wit.
Entranced as I slowly became part of it.
Blessed with a zest for living and a startling emotion.
You give meaning to life and worth to devotion.
From one of the many lives touched by this great man, he will be missed but never forgotten.
My thoughts and prayers go out to his family

Zyggy, he was called, by those of us who knew him well' . will always be rememberd as a great teacher and friend. He could be stubborn and funny and sarcastic and sweet. He was an artist who had his own voice and I am proud to have heard it. My condolences to Troy and his family and to the art world who will miss him. Lynn Loscutoff

Dear Coy,
I didn't know your father, but I do know he has a wonderful heritage in you, another fine artist. Your beautiful painting of the old Mishwaka Library hangs in the Circulation Dept. of the library, where I work part time, so I think of you often. I hope the Jankowski talent continues in your son. Best.

We have known Ziggy for more than 50 years as an artist, teacher, character and friend. He was one of those special people that gave the best of himself to all who came to know him. A little of the joy has gone out of life, but he left behind a wonderful legacy of beautiful work which will live forever. Our condolences to Myra and his family.Rest in peace my friend.
