Harold Stang Obituary

Harold G. Stang
Harold George Stang, 84, of Middlesex Township died on Friday afternoon at UPMC Passavant Hospital in McCandless.
Born in Valencia on May 14, 1928, the son of the late Harold Roscoe and Florence Rosebaugh Stang, he grew up in Valencia and attended Mars High School, where he met his future bride, Ruth Kind.
In high school Harold excelled in sports, lettering in both football and track. His sports success earned him an athletic scholarship at Geneva College, where he graduated with a degree in education in 1950.
On June 27, 1950, Harold married Ruth, who also attended Geneva College. Ruth preceded him in death on May 31, 2003.
Harold began his teaching career at Washington Elementary School in 1950. By 1956, he had moved to the Mars School District, where he taught at the elementary, intermediate and high school level, retiring in 1985.
Harold had a passion for history, farming and traveling. After retirement he raised sheep and cattle, and grew plenty of sweet corn to share with friends and family. Harold visited every state in the U.S. except Oregon and visited many foreign countries, most recently Switzerland.
He was a founding member and past president of the Valencia Historic Society, and a 40-year member and past president of the Butler Chapter of Kiwanis. Harold also volunteered at the Lighthouse Food Pantry. He was a lifetime member, trustee and organist at Valencia United Methodist Church. Harold was also a former board member of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.
Harold loved the game of Jeopardy and always celebrated when he got the final Jeopardy clue. He was always up for a good game of cards, especially 500, which he continued to play until his final day.
Surviving are two daughters, Cindy Knauff (David), and Linda Moore (John); one son, Roy Stang (Deanna); his eight grandchildren; his three great-grandchildren; and his great friend and traveling companion, Nancy Hannigan.

Mr. Stang was a great friend and teacher of mine. Our families (McKelvy) used to share Christmas together with the Potts' and Stangs. He not only was my principal in elementary school, but my POD teacher as a senior. we worked together in the summer once at Fey Steel and they assigned me to be his helper in laying out the columns for an addition to the building. He was a hard worker and a skilled wood worker. I respected him highly. A truly great man.

I NEVER HAD THE PLEASURE OF HAVING HAROLD AS A SCHOOL TEACHER, BUT I HAD THE PLEASURE OF SEEING HIM IN ACTION AT THE CHURCH IN VALENCIA. WHAT A GIANT OF A MAN, JUST LIKE HIS HANDS WERE. THOSE HANDS WERE MADE BIG SO HE COULD HELP EVERYBODY WHO NEEDED AN EXTRA HAND AND THATS WHAT HE DID WITH THEM. TO ALL HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY , YOU HAVE MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY. FAREWELL MY FRIEND TILL THE GRAND SUMMONS.

Dear Cindy, Linda and Roy,

So sorry to read about the death of your father. What a great guy with a very dry sense of humor. I knew him for many years starting when he was my teacher in the 7th grade through all the years when we taught together. He even named a cow after me.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies over your loss.

To all the family, I am sorry to hear of your loss. I remember having Mr. Stang as a teacher. I also live in Villa Vista in the double wide next to the farm. I have missed seeing his cows and I will miss seeing him care for the farm. I pray that God will comfort you during this time.

Linda, Cindy, Roy, and families: I am sincerely sorry to hear of your father's passing. I will never forget his class in high school. Clearly, History was his passion. I know that you have many memories of your time together to help you through this.
I regret that I am too far away to pay my respects in person.
