Bessie M. Higgins, 110, of Cabot passed away Sunday at Concordia Lutheran Ministries.
She was born Dec. 23, 1902, in Concord Township, Pa., the daughter of the late David Alonzo and Amanda Stillwagon Brown.
Bessie was a graduate of Concord Township High School, Butler Business School, where she also taught, and received her bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University. She taught numerous places from a one-room school in Concord Township to Zelienople Children's Home. She retired from the Butler School District as a special-education teacher.
Bessie was a member of the First English Lutheran Church for more than 60 years. She also was a member of Unionville Grange and Butler Women's club.
She is survived by a daughter, Marilyn Davis of Yardley, Pa.; a son, Rodney Higgins of Fairfax Station, Va., seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Frank D. Higgins, who died in January of 1985, and a daughter, Suzanne Burns, who died in April of 1999.
HIGGINS - Burial services for Bessie M. Higgins, who passed away Sunday, July 7, 2013, will be private. A memorial service will be later at Concordia.
In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to Concordia Health and Human Care or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Young Funeral home, Butler.
