Jeannette H. Galkowski

WEST YARMOUTH — Jeannette H. (Samborski) Galkowski, age 87, of West Yarmouth died on Friday, July 25, 2008, at Cape Cod Hospital, after a brief illness.

She was the wife of the late Dr. Theodore T. Galkowski, professor emeritus, Providence College. They were married for 58 years, summered on Cape Cod since 1959, moving here full time in 1992.

Born and raised in Worcester, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Clementine (Adamkievicz) Samborski. She graduated from St. Mary's School and Commerce High School.

Mrs. Galkowski's professional career took her from the office of the Worcester County Clerk of Courts to Battelle Labs in Columbus, Ohio. After raising her family, she worked for the state of Rhode Island Department of Higher Education, retiring as the administrative assistant to the commissioner of higher education.

Jeannette enjoyed antiquing, knitting, cooking and baking, especially her Polish recipes, and nurturing her colorful perennial gardens. She was truly a master gardener.

She is survived by two sons, Mark S. Galkowski and his wife Lynda of West Yarmouth, and Jan T. Galkowski and his wife Helen of Cambridge; two grandchildren, David and Jeff Galkowski; three sisters, Connie McCabe of Milton, Estelle S. Groat of New York, N.Y., and Elizabeth Marc of Auburn; and many nieces and nephews. Connie and Jeannette were especially close as were their families.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 2, at 10 a.m., at St. Francis Xavier Church, Hyannis. Burial will follow at the Francis Xavier Cemetery in Centerville. Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Friday, Aug. 1, 2008, at the Morris & O'Connor Funeral Home, 58 Long Pond Drive, South Yarmouth, 508-398-2121.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her name to the John Paul II High School Scholarship Fund, 120 High School Road, Hyannis, MA 02601, or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Francis Xavier Parish, 19 Cross Street, Hyannis, MA 02601.
