Samuel Norris Petry

1950 - 2021

Samuel Norris Petry, 70, of Westminster went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 6, 2021, after complications arising from heart surgery. Sam was the beloved husband of Margie Lee Petry whom he married nearly 52 years ago on April 12, 1969. Sam was born on November 16, 1950 in Westminster to the late Paul McClelland and Madeline Ruby Chew Petry. He was a graduate of Westminster High School, Class of 1968. Sam was a member of the US Naval Reserves for 23 years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer. He also worked as a truck mechanic, service adviser and service manager for many years until retiring in 2017. Sam was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 467 Westminster. He was an avid fisherman and member of the Carroll County Bass Assassins, winning multiple Lunker Bass of the Year and Angler of the Year awards. If he wasn't fishing, then either, Margie was dragging him off to a bingo game somewhere, or he was busy playing poker. He was a seasoned poker player who loved playing Texas Hold'em and he competed in several leagues and many tournaments. If you had the misfortune of sitting at the same table as him, there is a good chance that your money went toward the boats and old cars that he loved working on and seemed to always be fixing up. Sam also had an affinity for deer hunting and sports, playing softball, baseball, soccer, and even roller hockey at age 50! More recently, he focused that love of being outside to the game of golf, where he could be found many evenings on the course for a quick nine. Sam thoroughly enjoyed building things and woodworking in the custom man-shed that he built. His greatest passion, though, was spending time with his family. He truly was the life of every party with his endless supply of quick wit and jokes. He will be missed more than he could ever know. In addition to his wife, Sam is survived by his two sons, Brandon Petry and fiancée Myrnelle Damas of Arnold, MD along with Curtis Petry and wife Kristen of Hanover, PA. He will be missed by his 5 grandchildren, Savanna Petry of Gainesville, FL; Lance Petry of Tracey's Landing, MD; Wyatt, Lucas and Austin Petry, all of Hanover, PA. Sam also leaves behind a brother, Jeffrey Petry and wife Donna of Jane Lew, West Virginia; a sister-in-law, Patricia Petry of Hanover, PA; and a brother-in-law Alan Rhodes of Finksburg, MD. In addition to his parents, Sam was predeceased by siblings Paul Petry, Jr. and Brenda Rhodes. His family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 8 pm at Pritts Funeral Home & Chapel, 412 Washington Road, Westminster. Social distancing protocols will be in place at the funeral home. A private funeral service and interment will be held for family only on Wednesday, February 17th at 10 am at the funeral home with Pastor John Dean officiating.
