Bessie Hughes Obituary

Bessie Ellen Hughes MT. PLEASANT - Bessie Ellen Stewart Hughes, 94, of Mount Pleasant, SC, widow of Dola Hughes, entered into eternal rest Thursday, December 13, 2012. A graveside service will be held Sunday, December 16, 2012 in the Carolina Memorial Park Cemetery, 7113 Rivers Avenue at 2:00 pm. Arrangements by J. HENRY STUHR, INC., NORTHWOODS CHAPEL. Mrs. Hughes was born May 2, 1918 in Savannah, GA, one of six children of John William Stewart and Julia Eaton Stewart. She was a graduate of North Charleston High School, formerly employed at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and a lunchroom manager at Chicora Elementary School. Mrs. Hughes was a volunteer for more than 20 years at Trident Hospital. She was a very active member of the former Charleston Heights Baptist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Dola Gresham, Charleston, SC; son, Jay Hughes of Dorchester, SC; granddaughters: Ellen Gresham of Washington DC, Laura Gresham of Charleston, SC, Cheryl Gunter and her husband Lanny of Columbia, SC; sister, Kate McCarter, Charleston, SC; brother, Tom Stewart of Newberry, SC; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
