Joyce Gilbert Obituary

GILBERT Joyce Gilbert of Fairfield, passed away on Sunday February 7, 2010 at Bridgeport Hospital. Mrs. Gilbert was born July 17, 1932 in West Roxbury, Mass., and was a graduate of the Massachusetts School of Art, and received her graduate degree in art education from Harvard University. Joyce was a member of the newly reformed Fairfield Council of the Arts, the Bridgeport Council of the Arts, and founder of Art Place in Fairfield. She was reviewed in the New York Times by art critic Hamilton Kramer as lyrical, a poetic avocation of nature. Joyce was the recipient of many awards, including top prize in Art of the Northeast U.S.A. in 1984, the Out of Town Scholarship from the Art Students League, Individual Artists Grant from the Connecticut Commission on the Arts, and was a pioneer in the design of color television commercials, as her work appeared in scores of television commercials. Her works appear in many corporate headquarters throughout the northeast, a whole floor at Sloan Kettering Hospital in New York where fourteen of her works are displayed, as well as in many private collections. To sum up her art, Joyce felt her work has been concerned more with pleasure rather than theory. Joyce was very active at Congregation B'nai Israel designing stationary, brochures, concert programs, Cantica Hebraica. Art Place, 111 Unquowa Rd. in Fairfield, honored Joyce with a retrospective of her works which opened on February 6th and will continue through February 28th. Mrs. Gilbert is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Cantor Ramon Gilbert of Fairfield; her devoted children, Caryn Turner and her husband; Meir of New York, N.Y., Eliahu Ben Reuven and his wife, Adena of Jerusalem, Israel; cherished sister, Janice Milligan and her husband, Arthur of Venice, Fla.; and by adored grandchildren, Daniel, Gavriel and Yona. Funeral services will take place on Tuesday February 9, 2010 at 11 a.m. from Congregation B'nai Israel, 2710 Park Avenue in Bridgeport. Shiva will be observed at the Gilbert residence in Fairfield on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. Interment will be PRIVATE. The Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Dear Ray (Cantor Gilbert): The girls and I send you our sincere condolences together with comforting hugs.
I hardly knew Joyce, although as artists our paths did cross. But you were a large part of the girls early teens and a wonderful mentor. Hoping the sadness is replaced with wonderful memories soon. Peggy (Sacks) Weis
