WILLIAM MUTRYN Obituary

William Joseph Mutryn, 91, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 3 at his home on Eastholm Road in Schenectady surrounded by his loving wife, Alice and family members. Bill was born in Schenectady, the youngest child of the late Mary Kapela and Andrew Mutryn, both of whom emigrated to the United States from Poland. Bill was a lifelong resident of Schenectady and a graduate of St. Joseph's Academy. Bill proudly served his country as a private first class in the US Army Air Corps during World War II in the European theater in France, Belgium and England. Returning after the war, Bill resumed working at the General Electric Company in the large steam turbine department. Bill married Alice Sawicki of Schenectady on August 31, 1947, and Bill and Alice shared 64 years of marriage. Bill is survived by five children, William (with wife, Cynthia) of Potomac, MD, Margaret Mutryn MacGiffert (with husband, Paul) of Rexford, NY, Thomas (with wife, Donna) of Potomac, MD; Mary of Rockville, MD, and Andrea Del Vecchio (with husband, Michael) of Niskayuna. Bill was the loving and supportive grandfather of David, Alyssa, Marie, Michael and Mary Mutryn; and Christine, Alexander, Elizabeth and Ava Del Vecchio. Bill was the step grandfather of Anne and Shannon MacGiffert, and Christopher and Matthew Del Vecchio. Bill was filled with joy with the recent arrival of his great-granddaughter, Alice. His sisters, Victoria Patcigo and Voilet Cieszynski and his brother, Benjamin predeceased Bill. He is survived by his sister, Jessie Tooley. Bill had a wide range of interests. He enjoyed the game of golf, which he took up after retiring from General Electric after 40 years of employment. He was a lifelong avid fisherman, and the Great Sacandaga and Galway Lakes were his favorite haunts. Bill was active in the St. Luke's Holy Name Society, the American Legion 1005 post, the Western Gateway Coin Club, and the IUE retirement group. He served as an usher for many years at St. Luke's Church. Bill and Alice enjoyed traveling during their retirement, visiting their children and taking a number of trips to the Hawaiian Islands where they enjoyed the sun, surf, food, and island hospitality. Bill was a devoted and loving husband to Alice. They enjoyed a long and happy marriage. Bill took special delight and pleasure with his grandchildren. He gave them his love, time, support, and encouragement. Bill was a good neighbor and a friend to many. Bill showed generosity to all his family members and friends in every sense of the word. He encouraged all to be the best at whatever they did in life. Bill lived his life by his mottos that 'Work Conquers All' and 'Love is Repaid by Love Alone.' Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at 9:15 a.m. at the Kazyaka Funeral Home, 819 Eastern Aveune, Schenectady. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Luke's Church in Schenectady, followed by burial at the Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday, December 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Kazyaka Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in William's name can be made either to the Community Hospice of Schenectady, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308 or to St. Luke's Church, 1241 State St., Schenectady, NY 12304.
