Kenneth Gunderson Obituary

Kenneth Jay Gunderson, 67, peacefully passed away at home on February 10th, 2020 in Sandy, UT. Ken was born April 30, 1952 to Kearn and Eleanor Oelke in Burbank, CA. After his father's passing he was adopted by Lloyd Gunderson and raised by Lloyd and Eleanor in Northridge, CA. Ken graduated from Northridge High School and attended the University of Utah, where he graduated with a B.S. in Political Science in 1974. In college Ken was in the Navy ROTC and was an inaugural member of the University of Utah lacrosse team. After graduation, Ken was commissioned in the United States Navy and became a Naval Aviator. In 1976, Ken married the love of his life, Mary Harris, in the Salt Lake Temple. Ken served for 23 years as an aviator in the United States Navy, flying off aircraft carriers and serving in Operation Desert Storm. From 1993 to 1995 he served as the commanding officer of VR-57. He retired from the Navy as a Captain. Ken also had a successful 30-year career as a pilot for Delta Airlines. He retired from Delta as a Captain after serving as an assistant chief pilot, line check airman, flight instructor, and a member of the Delta Chairman's Club.
Ken and Mary raised five sons and he was an exemplary husband, father, and grandfather, and is a hero to his family. He and Mary had many adventures together traveling the world and raising their boys. Ken spent countless hours with his sons riding bicycles, shooting guns, and goofing around. Beyond his family, Ken positively influenced hundreds of young men as a lacrosse coach at Jordan High School and Utah Valley University. As a scouter with the Boy Scouts of America he helped dozens of young men achieve their Eagle rank. He loved spending time in his garden, caring for his large vegetable patch, orchard, chickens, and honeybees. Ken's persona was larger than life itself. He loved playful pranks and had an independent spirit. In all of his roles- as a father, a pilot, a coach, a church leader, or as a neighbor he sought to be a mentor and friend first. All aspects of Ken's life shared a common thread, that of service to family, country, church and community.
Ken is survived by his wife Mary, his sons: Jansen (Anna), Seth (Eugena), Kellen (Rachel), Jarom (Rebecca), & Corey (Karin), and twelve grandchildren: Fisher, Roen, Aaron, Saraya, Clara, Cambria, Elodie, Noah, Soren, Niels, Abigail, & Weston; his brothers Robert Gunderson (Tina) and Randall Gunderson (Garry), and sister Denise Ridenour (Steve). Ken was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Eleanor Gunderson.
There will be a public viewing for Ken at the LDS Chapel at 2130 E. 10000 S. Sandy, UT 84092 on Saturday, February 15th from 9:00-11:00 AM. Following the viewing there will be a funeral service in the same location from 11:30 AM-12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Gunderson family-

I'm heartbroken to hear of Ken's passing. He was one of my most favorite and long time Saturday morning Spinners - attending my class on most 'off season" Saturday's for the past 2 decades! It was always a perfect way to start each weekend with his hard work ethic, and fun sense of humor.
Ken took beautiful photos of my boys years ago that are some of my greatest treasures in my home. Each time I saw him he talked of his family or gave great advice: his amazing wife Mary, his garden, his boys, his grandkids, the ship he was commissioning, and his tips on biking, legoland, or Cruising with Mary.
Saturday mornings will not be the same without our respected and dearly loved friend Ken.
Much love,
Susan Smith

E has kept Kens challenge coin in his flight bag since the day Ken cut his tie and presented him with the coin and wings. He was a wonderful mentor. Ken was a great man.

Ken is a great man! I enjoyed him as a lacrosse coach; in fact, during a dinner with my work colleagues in San Diego last week I mentioned that Coach Gunderson taught us about professionalism and mind over matter. Ken was an excellent scout and church leader and had a positive impact on me as a young man. Ken took my wife's bridal pictures 11 years ago. I was always impressed by his endurance as a biker. Thank you for your friendship Ken!

Thanks for "pulling gear" for me a few decades back at Delta, Ken. At 82, my memory is a little foggy these days, but your obituary reveals a very dedicated and involved man. You are sorely missed.

Ken gave me my "safe for solo" check ride in Meridian Mississippi in a T2C a very long time ago (1980). We were in the same Navy community and then together at Delta. I always enjoyed his friendship. What a great guy and a very sad loss for all. ~Ed Havrilla~

Ken was my friend the moment I first met him! He was ALWAYS so friendly and kind to me and my family. I was grateful to have been able to live close to him for many years to have that association. Shortly after moving from our Sandy neighborhood to Herriman, I was given a church calling that had me with the youth of our ward all the time. We were going to do a mountain bike trip in Bryce Canyon and my bike tires were spent. Ken found out and gave me a "worn out" set of tires he had in his garage. Those tires are still on my bike ten years later and serve as another constant reminder of just how kind and thoughtful Ken was to me. I love him and his family and am grateful to know that he passed squarely on the Covenant Path and that we will all be together again - the next time forever. I smile at the thought of Ken and my son, Styles, having a reunion of their own. My love to all of the Gunderson Family!

Mary-
Words fail...I'm just sad.
Ken-
I'll miss your sharp wit and your humor 'I'm not an athlete, I'm a ballplayer'. Mostly I'll miss the sage counsel you provided this fellow Conquistador.

Ken is and always will be a big part of our lives. We enjoyed him in college, in Navy flight training, with Delta, and as a neighbor and fellow Church member. He and his humor will be sorely missed. Mary and boys, we feel your loss and pray for your strength and comfort at this time. Please know that we love you all and hope to be there for you as Ken was always there for us & everyone else.

Ken was my son Christian's lacrosse coach in 2006 and 2007 at Jordan High School. In a day and age where high school sports gets a reputation of showing favoritism, a "me" mentality and politics in the athletic system, Ken had the incredible ability to bring all the players to be the epitome of a team. The days of being on that lacrosse team were among the best memories, for our son and for us. He will forever be held in the highest esteem for our family.

Mary, Jansen, Seth, Kellen, Jarom and Cory,
It's too challenging to list all the ways Ken made his positive impact on our lives. You are built from that mold, with that same spirit and in you Ken lives for generations to come. He wasn't a boastful man but his pride in your accomplishments was his greatest joy. Thanks for sharing this great guy with us all. He will be missed.

Mary,

I am at a loss for words. I can think of no words that might bring you comfort after your loss of Ken. I can't find words to adequately describe the degree of respect and esteem that I held for my friend. I'm also unable to express my sorrow at the loss of not having more days with Ken. Catherine and I hold you, your sons, and their families in our prayers. You are in our hearts in these trying days.
