Burchfield James R "Jim" Burchfield, age 90, September 13, 2014. Cherished husband, father, and grandfather. Survived by wife of 65 years, Dorothy A. Underwood; son, James Randolph (Laura) Burchfield of Circleville, Ohio; daughters, Susan (William) Holliday, Seattle, WA, and Stephanie Burchfield (Steven Moore), Portland, OR; seven grandchildren, James and Ruby Burchfield, Jud, Will, and Jessica Holliday, and Elizabeth and Melissa Moore; and great-granddaughters, Violet and Genevieve Holliday. Graduated from Celina High School, Celina, OH and Ohio State University, BA and JD. First Eagle Scout from Mercer Co, OH. Veteran WW II (Army Air Force). OSU President's Club, Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, President 1942. American Legion, Post 430, past Post Commander and past District Judge Advocate; Council of Ohio Society for Colonial Wars; Southgate Masonic Lodge 692 (Treasurer, Southgate Temple Co. for 34 years); Scottish Rite and Aladdin Shrine; Past President of both East Side Business Assoc. and United Business Assoc.; Better Hearing Institute (National Director); Ohio State Historical Society (Life Member); Columbus Goodwill Industries (former Trustee and Treasurer). Practiced law for 50 years at 1313 E. Broad St. with Burchfield, Smith and Nelson until 1979 when he joined with his son as Burchfield & Burchfield. Member of Columbus Bar Assoc, Ohio State Bar Assoc, American Bar Assoc., Am. Judicature Society, Arbitrator for Am. Arbitration Assoc.; original Chairman of Ohio Bar Assoc. committee to study liability insurance, and in 1978 became first President of the Ohio Bar Liability Ins. Co. until he retired in 1994. Charter member Ohio Bar College; Life fellow O.S. Bar Foundation; Fellow Columbus Bar Foundation; Franklin Co. Trial Lawyers Assoc. Life member of Columbus Downtown Sertoma Club; Club President 1958, NE Ohio Gov. 1960, International Director 1963, International President 1967; Life Patron Sertoma International Foundation and President in 1977. Executive Dir. Franklin Co. Youth for Eisenhower; member Phi Alpha Theta, History Honorary; Scabbard and Blade, Military Honorary; recipient of Columbus JCs Outstanding Young Men Award for 1956; Honorary Life Member of Capital City Young Republican Club, Special Counsel to the Ohio Attorney General (1953-56) and member 1970 National Award Jury for Freedom Foundation, Valley Forge. Member of Church of the Messiah United Methodist Church and former Old First Methodist Church member. Family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Thursday September 18, 2014 at RUTHERFORD-CORBIN FUNERAL HOME, 515 High St, Worthington, Ohio, 43085, where memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday September 19, 2014. Private interment. Masonic service 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice Memorial Fund, 333 N. Summit St., PO Box 10086, Toledo, OH 43699, or to a charity of your choice.
