DONALD DAWSON Obituary

DONALD H. "DOC" DAWSON, 91, passed away Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013 at the Village of Heritage late Saturday afternoon following a illness of several weeks. Don was a lifelong resident of Monroeville. He was born Dec. 25, 1921 a son of the late Harold R. and Eulalia M. (Martin) Dawson. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he was in the 19th Depot Repair Squadron. he was in the Rhineland Battle and the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre Campaign and received one bronze star. He was honorably discharged in October 1945. He married Agnes M. Schall on Sept. 12, 1945 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville where he had been a former usher. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #864 in Decatur and the American Legion Post #420 in Monroeville. He retired in 1985 as a Postal Clerk at the U. S. Post Office in Monroeville after 43 years of service. He had also formerly worked as a funeral assistant at the former Marquart & Jacobs Funeral Home and Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville for many years. Surviving are his wife, Agnes M. Dawson of Monroeville; daughters, Rose M. (Jerry) Jacobs, and Therese A. (James) Altman both of Monroeville; sons, Michael A. (Nancy) Dawson of Grabill, Lawrence E. Dawson of Monroeville, and Patrick G. (Margaret) Dawson of Fort Wayne; brother, Daniel (Nede) Dawson of Rotonda West, Fla.; sisters, Eleanor Van Horn of Monroeville, and Mary (Maurice) Kline of New Haven; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one child, Tommy Dawson (age 7); sister, Patricia Dawson; two brothers, Louis and Earl Dawson. A Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville. A prayer service is 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville. Fr. Joseph D'Souza officiating. Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013 at the funeral home. Burial at St. Rose Catholic Cemetery with Military Graveside Services by American Legion and V.F.W. Posts of Monroeville. Memorials to Masses at the church, Monroeville E.M.S., or St. Joseph Catholic School Centenary Fund. MY CONDOLENCES TO THE DAWSON FAMILY, I REMEMBER DON AS OUR POSTMAN, HE ALWAYS HAD A CHEERY SMILE WHEN I PICKED UP MY FAMILY'S MAIL. TO ROSIE AND THE REST OF THE FAMILY, YOU ARE IN MY PRAYERS. I'm so sorry for your loss Don was a verry nice man I would talk to him when I stoped in the American Legion post 420. I worked at Patton Elect with Therese a lot of years and asked Don how she was doing every time I was at post 420. God bless the dawson family.
