We are TFC Ericsons parents. We only met John a few times but the wonderful, funny stories of their shared experiences in the 114th training academy still make us smile. John was a good friend and his passing has made a huge hole in the lives of those who loved him, including our son and daughter-in-law. Rest in peace, John. Go gently into that good night.

John was one of the REAL State Troopers. A rare find these days. He was a loving and caring father. John always shared stories about them and as he did you could just see how much he cared for them. He was with me during the good times and bad. But he always had a way about him that made the bad times better and could even get a smile out of me. We laughed together and enjoyed life together. He even made the routine things fun. John was my classmate, my best friend, my brother... and I don't know what I am going to do without him.

My 7th grade son, Blake Anderson, came home the other day to tell me that one of the students in his grade lost their father. Although he was only an aquaintence with Ally, he was sad for her and your family's loss. I am passing along his, and our entire family's condolences to you & your family during this difficult time. Passing by the church this morning on the way to work I was awestruck by the hundreds of troopers in uniform and lot full of cars and busses. Clearly, the world has lost a very special person.

Troopers from Troop C Receive Service Awards

Trooper Christopher Snow, Trooper John Scannell, Stafford Police Sergeant James Desso On July 2, 2006, Stafford Police Sergeant James Desso observed smoke and flames coming from an apartment in a Stafford residence. He notified Troop C and the Stafford Resident State Troopers of the fire. Without hesitation and without the protection of the fire department, Sgt. Desso, Trooper Christopher Snow and Trooper John Scannell entered the burning building, found apartments occupied and quickly moved the occupants out of harms way. Staffordville Fire Chief Neil Sadlak later stated that the combined efforts of Stafford Police Sgt. Desso, Trooper Snow and Trooper Scannell had saved the lives and prevented a tragedy. The three were awarded Lifesaving Medals.

Trooper John Scannell, Officer James Desso, Sergeant Clanford Pierce, Trooper First Class Neil Manning, Trooper First Class Jay Gershowitz, Trooper First Class Daniel McCarthy and Trooper First Class Patrick Dwyer On July 5, 2006, Troop C received a call regarding a despondent male who had run into the woods with a knife and was threatening to harm himself. Trooper John Scannell and Sergeant James Desso of the Stafford Resident Troopers Office were dispatched to the call and established a perimeter. Minutes later, Sergeant Clanford Pierce, Troopers First Class Neil Manning, Jay Gershowitz, Daniel McCarthy and Patrick Dwyer and his K-9 Brit arrived on scene. Trooper Dwyer began a track and was able to locate a bloodied subject sitting in the woods with a knife to his throat. The subject refused to put the knife down. Troopers executed a plan and the despondent male agreed to put down the knife. The subject was secured and transported to the hospital. All Troopers involved received a Unit Citation.

Sergeant John Scannell
Sgt. Scannell was promoted from Trooper First Class and has been assigned to Troop D in Danielson. A Trooper for nine years, Sgt. Scannell has earned awards for Meritorious and Lifesaving Service and three Unit Citations. He has served as a Trooper at Troop D and at Troop C in Tolland and most recently served as Resident State Trooper in Stafford. Sgt. Scannell earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Worcestor State College and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College in Paxton, MA.

Thank You John for keeping us safe, rest in peace.

To a true gentleman - one of quiet dignity, whose warmth and kindness always put others at ease. If you met someone once, they remembered you easily. People that were fortunate enough to be your friend, co-worker or relative, had very few dull moments and lots of laughs in your company. I was blessed that you were meant to be a part of my life, my cousin, you have been and always will be very special to me. I will miss your smile & that twinkle in your eyes that said you were up to no good or planning to be very soon. Love you always. . .

Christian, my wife Debbie and I are so sorry for your loss and the loss your children suffered. John was a great man, great Trooper, and friend. I had the distinct pleasure to work with John at Troop C. He was dedicated to his carreer, but more importantly he loved his.family. I had spoken to John several times and he would always talk about you and your children. When he spoke about you guys he always had a smile on his face. Most recently, I spoke to him at the Coalition Picnic in Boston. When we were talking he was brought to tears as he spoke. He said that the most important thing to him, in his life was you and his children. I was deeply moved by his thoughts about the way he loved his family. I will forever cherish this conversation I had with John. I will miss John as a fellow Sergeant, State Trooper, but most importantly as a friend. May God watch over you and bless your family during this difficult time. Chris Sharland & family.
