Edward Riccio Obituary

Major Edward J. Riccio Jr., 96, of Bristol, passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, six days shy of his 97th birthday on November 29th 2016. Edward (Rick) was the loving husband of Theresa Ann Riccio who predeceased him this year on February 10, 2016. Born in Bristol on November 29, 1919, he was the last surviving of the ten children of the late Edward Riccio Sr. and Angela (Ferrucci) Riccio. Edward leaves his children, Mark E. Riccio and wife Amy of Naples, Florida, Eddie Riccio III of Bristol, Connecticut and Jo-Ann Riccio-Larson and her husband Stephen who he loved like a son. He leaves grandchildren Stephanie, Eddie-Joe, Jennifer and Alexandria as well as many nieces and nephews. Ed attended Northside, St. Joseph's and Jennings grammar schools before moving to New Rochelle, N.Y. He returned to Bristol after the war and operated Ed's Amoco for 18 years on Route 6 in Bristol (and built his own airplane out of balsa wood in one of the bays there) which he kept at Plainville Airport and is now showcased at the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks, CT. After closing the gas station he worked and later retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in Southington, CT at age 65. Ed's biggest accomplishment was being a Pearl Harbor Survivor. Ed enlisted in the Army Air Corps when he was 20 years old about a year before WWII started. He was stationed at Hickam Field, right near Pearl Harbor when the first bomb from Japan was dropped. He worked night and day on the remaining planes that were not destroyed to get them back into working order. Later in the war he volunteered as a top turret gunner for the Calamity Jane, a B-17 bomber. He was on the bomber above the Fiji Islands when it was hit and the pilot and co-pilot were killed. He had never flown a plane before but he didn't have much choice. He missed the landing at Guadalcanal and after getting an American flying escort he landed the plane with one wheel up, one wheel down, and one engine blown out. U.S. forces seized Guadalcanal from Japanese troops and after the battle Ed was approached by two generals in the hospital while being treated for injuries and told them he would like to go to pilot school. The Army gave him a Distinguished Flying Cross even though he was not a pilot. He returned to active duty in the states after the war ended as a pilot and had several assignments at the Berlin Airlift in 1948-49 where the Russian army had blockaded all entry into Berlin and he flew provisions of food and medical supplies to the people there. Ed served in the Army Reserves for the next 25 years. Ed was a member of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and partook of the 50th reunion in Hawaii in 1991 where he was celebrated with other survivors in a parade to honor them. He was also a member of the American Legion. Ed gave numerous discussions of the attack on Pearl Harbor over the years to schools and military gatherings and loved to be in the Bristol parades honoring their veterans. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 29th (his birthday) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at O'Brien Funeral Home, 24 Lincoln Avenue, Bristol/Forestville. All are welcome to meet directly at the church for a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, November 30th, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 235 Maltby Street, Bristol, CT. Committal services will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Bristol. Memorial donations may be made in Edward's name to New England Air Museum, 36 Perimeter Road, Windsor Locks, Connecticut 06096. Our father always said a phrase, and we would like to extend it to everyone reading this and we believe it was what got him to almost the age of 97, "Happy Mind, Happy Body." Our father never complained and looked for the good in everyone and loved and fought for our country and the freedom and beauty that it gives us. Thank you dad, we will miss you.

Sincere and heartfelt sympathy for Joann, Mark and Eddy. You all have so much to be proud of and so many good memories of a brave man, who happened to be your Father. I know it's been a year of loss for all of you, but there will be a time when you can recall stories of your parents and share a smile. Be kind to yourselves.

ED RICCIO walked into my life in 2010 at the old Sears Hardware store in Bristol. I was new there and saw this tall good looking man walk around the store. I approached him and saw his hat. PEARL HARBOR SURVIVOR it said with large wings clipped to the front.I smiled pointed up at his hat and asked if he minded telling me about it. What an amazing story. What an amazing life. We talked regularly every week or so until the store closed in 2014.He called our home in Bristol one day and when my wife answered he told her who he was and asked if I lived there as he has been wondering about me since the store closed and that was the only listing in town with my last name.Amazing man!So I tried calling him today the 75th anniversary of Pearl Harbor but there was no answer. I Googled a relative of his who I also have met only to find Ed's obituary from last week. PEACE BE WITH YOU ED RICCIO JR!!!

DAV Hardware City Chapter 8 and the Golden Kielbasa Veterans Open mourn the loss of Major Ed Riccio, a true American hero. "Rick" was our 2014 honoree, and we well remember that day when we, and more than 250 people at Tunxis Plantation, had the great privilege to show our appreciation and respect. I fondly recall spending a good deal of time with Ed in his basement prior to GK 2014, as he told war stories and we went through boxes of photos and mementos. He was clearly proud of his service to our country, and I know he was thrilled the day we honored him; it was our distinct pleasure. My life is richer for having gotten to know you, Ed. Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

I would like to extend our condolences to the Riccio family. Although I didnt know Mr Riccio very well, I knew of his bravery displayed in the past wars and of his dedicated service to his country. I know his family loved him dearly which is really most important of all. Hold all of your memories close to your heart Eddie, our prayers and thoughts are with you.

As a young boy growing up in Bristol, I was drawn to the Amoco gas station on Rte. 6 with the airplane in the garage and became friends with Ed Riccio. He had a model of a visible P&W Wasp engine that operated so you could see how it worked. Later I worked at Pratt in Southington and rekindled my friendship with him. He was a great friend and teacher who will be truly missed. Rest in Peace old friend, You earned it.
