Allen Jelks Obituary

Allen Nathaniel Jelks, Sr., MD

Dr. Allen N. Jelks, Sr. passed peacefully in the early morning of 26 May 2021 with his son by his side. Allen was born in Macon, GA to Howard Coates Jelks, Sr. and Beulah Louise Smith Jelks on 2 August 1930. Although the family lived in Fort Lauderdale since 1925 (population 8,600), Beulah wanted her second son delivered by the family physician in Georgia after being forced to flee a hurricane during her previous pregnancy. After graduating Ft. Lauderdale High School as Valedictorian, Allen attended Emory University for pre-medicine, and in 1955 received his Medical Degree as Valedictorian from Duke University. His studies were interrupted when he joined the U.S. Navy as a pediatrician at the U.S. Naval Submarine Base in New London, CT just after the Korean War. He met his wife, Mary Irene Larson, while they were both medical interns at Johns Hopkins University. Allen was always a huge railroad fan, and proposed to Mary in 1951 while on a train trip to visit her family in Illinois. After completing their pediatric residency in 1959, the newly married doctors relocated to Gainesville, FL for their residency at Shands Teaching Hospital, University of Florida. Allen was selected as Chief Resident in Pediatrics. By this time, Allen and Mary had three children: Helen, Allen, Jr., and Howard. After their residency, Allen and Mary started their own pediatric practice with Edward Rushton in Sarasota, FL. They were affectionately known as "Dr. Allen" and "Dr. Mary" and served hundreds of children, treating all patients the same, whether they had money to pay for their services or not. Sometimes a gallon of shucked oysters settled the bill. They helped migrant farm families and children of U.S. senators. Throughout their practice they were staff at Sarasota Memorial Hospital and in the Sarasota County Medical Association. While in Sarasota, a fourth child, Alice, was born. Allen and his family took many vacations, primarily throughout the United States, Europe, and Central and South America—frequently by train. They also enjoyed excursions closer to home, mainly fishing on the Myakka River and visiting Myakka River State Park (Mary was an enthusiastic volunteer at the Park for decades). Their love for the Myakka River led them to donate $1 million to Sarasota County toward the purchase of the 614-acre Jelks Preserve. Allen and Mary retired after serving the community's children for 25 years, whereupon Allen spent much of his time enjoying the vast array of cultural events Sarasota has to offer. Allen was an accomplished clarinet and tenor saxophone player. He attended every high school band reunion into his 80s. He was a long-term member of the Rotary Club of Sarasota Bay, receiving the Distinguished Service Award. He was a member of First United Methodist Church Sarasota and Suncoast Chapter of the National Historic Railway Society. In 1994, the family formed the Jelks Family Foundation. The Foundation has contributed to many local projects, including Sarasota Audubon's Celery Fields, Mote Marine Laboratory, Lemon Bay Conservancy's Wildflower Preserve, Sarasota Orchestra, Asolo Theatre, Ringling Museum, Conservation Foundation of the Gulf Coast, Selby Gardens, and many others. In 2003, Allen and Mary were awarded the Community Service Award; the Environmentalists of the Year Award by Sarasota County; and named the Environmental Heroes of the Year by the Growth-Restraint and Environmental Organization. Allen and Mary were inducted into the Sarasota Community Video Archives in 2004. After breaking his leg in 2017, Allen and Mary moved to Superior Residences in Panama City Beach, FL where his son Allen, Jr. and wife Debbie lived. Sadly, Mary passed in 2018 two months before her 89th birthday.

Allen is preceded in death by Mary, his wife of 60 years, and his brother, Howard. He is survived by his four children: Helen King (Chris) and Alice Lezcano (Edgar) of Sarasota, Allen Jelks, Jr. (Debbie) of Hendersonville, NC, and Howard Jelks (Lisa) of Gainesville, FL; and three grandsons, Benjamin King (and partner Nicole), Bryan King (Jennie), and Daniel Lezcano (and partner Victoria). At Allen's request there will be no services. If you would like to honor Dr. Jelks' life, please donate to a charity of your choice.

I was so sorry to learn of Dr Jelks' death. He was my doctor while I was growing up. He had the patience of a saint, he had to with a patient like me. He was always so caring and upbeat. I used to love the little smiley face he would draw on my bandage after drawing a wee bit of blood from my finger.

The world needs more caring doctors like this dear man was.

I worked at Sarasota Memorial on Peds for many years and saw the caring of both Dr Allen and Dr Mary for all their patients. They always exhibited great respect for those working with them and provided care for many of us even though we were older.
Their sharing of stories of their children and travels were always enjoyed. I found we had crossed paths many times along the way from days at Emory, Railroad travels and functions etc.
They were special caring people and will be missed by many.
God Speed Dr. Allen - Fair winds and following seas.

Dr. Jelks was my son's doctor from birth until 18. He was wonderful. Always called the next morning after an appointment to see if everyone was ok. He was so caring. Condolences to the family.

I only met Allen and Mary once, on a brief weekend trip home with Howard as college chums. What I recall most is the warning (and subsequent experience) of waking at the crack of dawn to a full breakfast, lots of activity, and Allen Sr. in his trademark bow tie--all before 6:00 a.m. The message was clear: no time to waste, things need to be done! They treated me to a night of ceviche and theatre. The love of their children was almost matched by their expectations of doing good in the world. The good doctors lived remarkably full and meaningful lives. Their loss will no doubt be felt for generations, but more importantly, so will their many contributions to making the world a better, more verdant place. May they both R.I.P.

What a great loss! I just loved Allen who I met through the Railroad organization he was in...when the Venice Historical Society was working to save the Depot.
He & wife Mary were such great people! Both contributed so much to this world of ours. I shall donate to Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation in Allen's name.

What very sad news and such a loss of a most wonderful, kind, generous gentleman and doctor! The Jelks pair were all four of my children's pediatricians and I will never forget their wise counsel, consideration of calling "the morning after" to make sure my children were on the mend and love for their professions... I think of them everytime I pass by their former office on Osprey Ave. and thank God we found them in 1976. God rest his and Mary's kind souls.

Dr. Jelks was my doctor when I was a child. I have fond memories of he and his wife and always thought they were vere nice. I remember after he drew blood from my finger he drew a smiley face on the bandage and it made me giggle. Thanks for your service. Rest in peace with God. See you one day one the other side.

Dr Allen was the pediatrician for both of my children. They both loved him and never feared going to their doctor. He always had a way of making them feel both cared for and loved. I am thankful he was their doctor! I also had the pleasure of knowing his cousin, Ruth Jelks who was my fifth grade teacher....she was the best! The Jelks family leaves behind a fine legacy with all they gave to their communities.

May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief. While I never had the pleasure of meeting your Dad, please know he raised a wonderful son and friend for many in you Howard (and Lisa). Now both of your parents can smile down on you and enjoy all the accomplishments you have made. My deepest sympathies and best wishes.

Dr. Allen and Dr. Mary were where our Mom took us as children - even when we became 'too old' to be treated by a pediatrician - Dr. Mary would never turn us away. Awesome people and they made the world and especially Sarasota, a much better place.

Rest in Peace Dr. Jelks. I worked nights in Pediatrics at SMH in the 80's , Dr. Jelks was always the first doc there in the morning, I can still hear his Good Morning as he switched all the lights on, he was such a cheerful and caring presence. A life well lived indeed!
