Winnette Wimberly Obituary

Dr. Winnette Vinyard Wimberly Longtime Clear Lake City resident and pediatrician Dr. Winnette Vinyard Wimberly passed away on the morning of July 10, 2013 to go to her well-deserved reward with her loving Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Winnette was 78.
The precious only child of Frankie Jane Jenkins Vinyard and Wilburn Morris "Doc" Vinyard, Winnette was born at home on August 31, 1934 in Gander Slough, Texas (near Luling) a small oil field community which no longer exists. Winnette grew up in nearby Prairie Lea, another small oil field community, and had recently refurbished her childhood home where she lived until illness took her back to Clear Lake City.
While Dr. Wimberly's four children were still young, she decided to fulfill her lifelong ambition to attend medical school to become a pediatrician. She attended Texas Woman's University in Denton and Rice University in Houston. Practically a pioneer, she was one of the first women to receive an M.D. from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. During her 28 years of practicing pediatrics in the Clear Lake City area, Winnette endeared herself to a large and loving following of patients. Upon retirement, she served for a number of years as a locum tenens physician which took her to clinics as far away as El Paso and south Texas. She was also a dedicated church volunteer.
Winnette will be remembered for her zest for life and love of all things that involved speed, from cars to boats to airplanes, many kinds of which she owned over the years. She was an avid sports fan and threw her enthusiasm behind all the local teams. She also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and could cook up an excellent steak and seafood dinner.
Winnette was very definitely the matriarch of the family and innumerable family gatherings centered around her. She was a thoughtful, generous gift giver and a gracious hostess. She loved to travel, and would wear out the roads in her Lexus visiting her children and grandchildren.
Although plagued by a myriad of physical problems over the last 10 years, she maintained her feisty spirit and never let a chance to enter into a debate go by. Her opinions and her will were strong and forceful, but were balanced by her fierce loyalty and love for her family. She was a force to be reckoned with and she will be sorely missed by those who loved her.
Winnette's family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Emeritus Clear Lake. They would also like to extend love and thanks to Loly and The Caring Angels for the loving care they gave to Winnette during her final month.
Winnette is survived by her eldest daughter Cyndi Wimberly, her partner Patty Manning of Alpine and grandchildren Marley, Mary and Jonathan Boyd; her son Dr. David Wimberly, his wife Kelli and granddaughters Claire, Hannah and Emma of Friendswood; and daughter Sally Eustice, her husband Scott and grandchildren Dylan, Morgan and Mason of Clear Lake City. She was preceded in death by her son Michael Wimberly and is survived by grandson Sean Wimberly of Austin.
Visitation will be at Crowder Funeral Home in Webster on Sunday, July 14th from 5-8 PM. The funeral will take place at Clear Creek Community Church in League City on Monday, July 15th at 10 AM. Graveside service will be held at Memory Lawn Memorial Park cemetery in Martindale, Texas on Monday, July 15th at 4PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Prairie Lea Baptist Church, Prairie Lea, Texas.

I know this is very late, but Dr. Wimberly was my sons' pediatrician from 1985-1990. She was the best! We moved to Wisconsin in 1990, otherwise I would not have left her.

My sincerest (late) condolences. Dr. Wimberly will forever hold a very special place in my heart, as she was my pediatrician in the late 80's and early 90's. I have never encountered a kinder or more genuine Doctor.
I thought about Dr. Wimberly this evening and discovered she had passed. Please know she is still on people's minds and will forever be in all our hearts.

I know it is late, but I wanted to express my condolences and share my experiences.

In March 1979, at 6 months of age, I nearly succumbed to an infection caused by Neisseria Meningiditis. Instead of going into my meningeal layers and causing meningitis, it caused an infection in my blood stream. I had meningococcal septicemia. None of the Dr.'s could quite figure out what was wrong with me. Some thought it was viral encephalitis; others thought it was the pathogen that caused crib death (unknown at that time). When I was life flighted to Herman Memorial, the docs there told my parents I had hours to live. But Dr. Wimberly, who was my pediatrician, acted on a hunch and flooded my body with Penicillin G. And because of her, my mom who never gave up, and God, I am here today.

The interpretations of the neurological scans suggested I suffered profound brain damage. However, my mother and my pediatrician refused to give up on me.

Now, I have not one but two college degrees; one of them in the medical field because I want to pay forward what was done for me.

Thank you Dr. Wimberly! The world lost one of it's best medical pioneers, but the children and humanity in general gained a wonderful guardian angel!!! Love you and Rest in Peace!

I was Winette's flight instructor in the 80's. Our mutual love of flying grew into a very close and personal relationship. She was my doctor until the tender age of 31, at which point she said I needed to get someone "more appropriate" for my age. She was my son's pediatrician until she retired. The world has lost a wonderful human being.

She was my neighbor when our children were little in Oakbrook West. She was a role model for all of us as a pioneer in our age group. She took care of her Mom and she was my youngest Childs doctor. She was loved by all who knew her for her kindness and her way of telling what the right thing to do was. She will be missed forever.

I did not know Dr. Wimberly socially, but as one of our pediatricians and as the mother of one of my students. I used to think how wonderful, she took care of my children while I took care of one of hers. She was an amazing doctor and I am saddened that we have lost her. I pray God stays close to those who knew her the best and you all find calmness and peace in knowing others loved her as well.

I was heartbroken to hear of Dr. Wimberly's death. My sons loved "Dr. Wimby" and she always treated us like we were the most important people in the office. Even when my boys were in their teens, they were o.k to have Dr. Wimberly treat their sickness. Her precious life is a legacy to all who ever met her. My love to your family.

To see a female physician when I was a child in the '70s was unusual. I am now a professor studying young children and consider her one of my role models.

I have had a broken heart since I found out about our sweet Dr.Wimberly. Not only did she treat the health of my kids, she treated their "outside" the practice health. She went to bat to make sure my gifted kids would not be ignored.
This truly is a huge loss for the community, all of the families she treated, but most of all,she was always there when we needed her.
Heaven has a wonderful angel and we will miss her greatly!

To the family of my favorite Dr. "Nette,"
She had been in my life literally from day one, when she dressed me to bring me home to meet my parents for the first time after I was born, with a bottle of bubbly, I might add. She and my mother had sisterly like bond that started way before I ever came along. Those two fireballs were just that behind any wheel, whether it be the corvette or the sail boat! She and my dad shared the deep conversations and the desire to be a part of nature.
They are out on some boat, having a long talk, waiting for the fish to bite....I am sure of that.
She will be forever missed and will always have a place in my heart. I am so sorry for your loss of such an extraordinary woman.

I met Winnette through David and Kelli, but in the last couple of years we had our own friendship. We kept in touch through Facebook where I got to enjoy the pics of her home in Prairie Lea. We also played Words with Friends, and she kicked my butt usually with medical terms. But my true joy was being able to do whatever I could to help her when she needed it. After taking her to a procedure once for her back, I found out she like the small Whataburger and fries! I also learned she liked the extreme chocolate Blizzard, and I was happy to pick one up for her when she was at Emeritus. She was an interesting lady, a competitive game player, a pioneer in her field, a cancer fighter, but most of all, my friend. I will miss her, but I have a happy heart that she is one of my Angels watching over me.
Prayers of comfort and peace to David, Kelli, Sally, Scott, Cyndi, Patty and all her wonderful grandchildren.

Due to distance and circumstances, I was only able to get to know Memaw in the final years of her life, but I am thankful for every second I had with her. She was fiercely intelligent, tough as nails, and quite possibly the only person that I have ever considered truly inspiring. She was a wonderful woman who took care of a great many people, and she was loved by so many. I am proud and eternally grateful to be one of her grandchildren.
