Alexander Goldstein, Jr., M.D., a cardiovascular anesthesiologist at the Texas Heart Institute and St. Luke's Hospital passed away on October 26, 2011 at age 75. Born in St. Louis, Missouri on December 30, 1935 to the late Alexander Goldstein, Sr. and Willie Mae Goldstein, he graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy. After Harvard (A.B.), Baylor University College of Medicine (M.D.) and internship (Hermann Hospital), he completed an anesthesiology residency. As an Asst. Prof. and Assoc. Prof. at BCM until 1974, he also served as an examiner for the American Board of Anesthesiology. He continued his work at the leading edge of cardiovascular medicine and surgery at The Texas Heart Institute and affiliated hospitals and UT MED School from 1974 to 1996 when he retired.
Beginning in high school, Alex was involved in public service projects his entire life. He was a member of the Harvard Club of Houston, a member of Sigma Xi, Phil Delta Epsilon Medical Fraternity, Osler Society, ASA, TSA, AMA, HCMS, Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists, International Anesthesia Research Society and Denton A. Cooley Cardiovascular Surgery Society. He was a supporter of educational and arts organizations. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Ann McNeill Goldstein, his son, David Neil Black and by a brother Robert W. Goldstein, Sr., numerous relatives and friends.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of Alex's life on Thursday, November 10th from five until eight o'clock in the evening at the Bradshaw-Carter Home. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be sent to the Science Fund at Phillips Exeter Academy, Exeter, NH.
