Loved your message, Muffie Blakley. So heart-felt. We must have been at Shoup camp together. . . And then visiting Squaw Creek. Vowed to stay in touch with Bev. Life [bad excuses] get in the way. Hoping Bev is doing well!!!

It may seem odd that I'm writing nearly 10 years after the loss of Carol - Birdie to me. I hadn't heard about her accident as I've been struggling with a serious illness for 11 years that leaves me out of the loop. I was looking up Carol to find Marry Looney. I found Mary. And, I found this heartbreaking news. It's a new wound for me. Bev, I'm so sorry.
I met Carol, Birdie, at Girl Scout horse camp in Shoup, Idaho. My best friend, Nancy, and I followed Birdie around like little puppies, doing whatever odd jobs down at the horse barn we could find to do, getting up at dawn before the other campers to help with the horses. I would do anything to have those eyes settle on me with glittering approval. Her glance was like the sun coming from behind a cloud. I don't remember much else from that camp. I'm sure we did other activities. I know for sure we ate. HA!
To our good fortune, Birdie lived in Caldwell. Nancy and I rode by her house, where she lived with her mother, many times. Birdie invited us up to her ranch. We were so excited. I remember my brother coming to tell me there was "a person" with amazing eyes at the front door for me. I said "Oh, that's Birdie. We're going up to her ranch." We had the time of our young lives helping mend fence. After having horse properties of my own, I can say with certainty that I learned to approach mending fence in sort of a zenlike, quieting (maybe not fun, exactly) way from Birdie. I can say for a fact that nobody went up to her ranch to sit around.
I ran into Birdie at the gas station in Council, Idaho in about 2004 where she and Bev sold their leather works. It had been at least 30 years. I wasn't sure it was her until she looked at me - those eyes were still twinkling. I was building a little horse ranch to work with with at risk kids in Indian Valley. We parted with promises that I would come to Ola and stay for a few days. Just send a post card saying I was coming to make sure they would be there. I had every intention of doing so but the rigors of building a place from scratch ny myself kept me on my side of the mountain. I'm so sorry I didn't get over there.
I'm truly saddened to learn about this 9 years after the fact. My heart goes out to you, Bev, if you read this. My heart feels a little bit broken today. Marthetta Muffie Blakley 1/20/24

So many years since Carol passed. . . And so many memories of good times on Squaw Creek. Last visit she rode me around in that red pickup over hills/dales most would not drive. LOL. Hope you're doing well, Bev! My intentions of getting over to Idaho to see you have gone estray. My best to you and all of Carol's family.

Was thinking about Carol and Bev just the other day. Such a loss too soon. My best wishes to Bev and Carol's whole family. Selfishly on my part: wish I could bring my granddaughter - who loves horses and all things outdoors - to meet Carol and Bev and have a little of the wonderful experiences I had on Squaw Creek.

2020 - still remembering Carol and imagining her roaming the hills around Bear Creek with the si-hill gougers. Think of Bev often too. Can't imagine where the years have gone! Always thought I'd get there to see Bev or at least write. Hope all is well.

Very fond memories of Carol after my late sister Susie organised for me to stay with them on the ranch on one of my visits from Australia. How she and Bev complimented each other with their varying skills. Carol was warm, welcoming and generous of heart. Rest In Peace in that big ranch in the sky Carol. Jan Saville

I could not let this opportunity go by without writing something about a special friend Carol was to me and my family. I met Carol 20 years ago when I worked at a doctor's office that she went to. I also knew her precious mother. Our friendship began when she would ask me to help her mom with her eye drops. I was happy to do so and we were friends from then on. My family was invited up to the ranch and it was our great fortune to have done so many times. She let us camp on her property. We had dinners with her and Bev. The tacos were always good and then one night it was deer steak. She loved showing us around the ranch and the rock house. It was always fun and a learning adventure. In 2008 my niece from NY visited and it isn't a trip to Idaho without visiting Carol & Bev. After dinner, we got on our ATV's and my niece got to herd cows! What a hoot! My niece still talks about the cowgirl she met in Ola, Idaho. A few years ago, Carol made me a Christmas stocking out of leather with some animal hair fringe. In it, was a shiney piece of black rock, which she informed me was coal! I am such a city girl!! She always invited us to the ranch to help build or mend fence. I told her I couldn't because I might break a nail! So, I volunteered my husband and I have photos of him helping her mend fence. Carol has been gone 3 weeks, and my heart is still heavy. It just won't be the same without Carol in this world. I am truly the lucky one for having known Carol. Her smile, laughter and great stories will be missed.

I haven't gotten to share a bowl of popcorn with Carol and Bev for a long time, and it's been decades since they loaded me up with pointy cedar posts to haul up a precipitous fence line. I still dream that I'm a field hockey right wing and "Shultz" is telling me to get a move on. She was a faithful friend and correspondent all these years and I wish I'd gotten to eat some more of that popcorn. Too many generous blessings to count from this one-of-a-kind person -- I am missing her presence in the world very sharply today. Warm thoughts and comfort to Bev.

Ms. Shultz taught me lessons in her classroom that have served me throughout my life. Every class was an adventure because you never knew what to expect. You always had to be prepared because you never knew when one of her famous "pop" quizzes would happen. To fill a spot in my schedule my freshman year I took the only class that sounded like fun- Taxidermy. Little did I know that it would be the beginning of hours spent before and after school. I can still hear her voice telling me "Gonzalez" you gotta get you hands dirty. Like many have said I too could fill a book with the memories she provided. Whether it was "tough love" like scrapping rawhide or even calling my parents I know now it was only because she had standards and they never wavered. Advanced and senior biology allowed me to take two trips to her cabin and I was truly able to see her in her environment. Bev sorry for your loss and thanks for sharing her for all those years. Know that she changed lives because she was a great teacher but an even better person.

I can literally say I knew this wonderful person my entire life. She was such a blessing to me. She gave me my first cowboy hat when I was a young man, she told me that the hat had stories behind it, and it should have many more if I wore it up hunting with my Grandpa. I will forever miss running into her on the mountain. She welcomed all of my family with a big smile, open arms, and a great story to share. Her stories never got tiring, but were always inspiring. Love to Bev, and family.

Ms Shultz was the teacher everyone talked about before and after having her class. I still have the card she gave me for graduation. Even after school I would always ask what would Ms. Shultz say to me. She was the best teacher you could ever ask for.

I'm as anxious today, coming to her services, as I was everyday walking into her class. There was always a pop quiz, a new challenging project, an engaging tale, or a quick witted quip waiting on the other side of that swinging door. She must have loved to teach, because we loved learning from her. I'm so sorry for your loss, Bev, and thank you for all the precious time of hers you have to us.

Ms. Shultz was the best teacher I ever had. She was tough because she cared. I had her for PE, biology, track and field hockey. She even taught us taxidermy! I had never picked up so much road kill in my life and was excited about it! My folks were OK with it as long as I put them in plastic bags before throwing them in the freezer!! My condolences and prayers to the family. Ms. Shultz you will be missed.... until we meet again...

One of the best teachers I ever had passed away last Tuesday. Ms. Shultz (as I always called her) was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend. We kept in touch over the years with letters and sometimes I'd run into her when I was home visiting family. I respected her a great deal and will miss her. Perhaps God needed a rancher in heaven. I sure hope so.

I could write a very long-winded tribute to one of my favorite teachers describing the lessons she taught that I would use in real life. I will never forget failing a pop quiz and getting to spend an hour after school cleaning a freshly boiled coyote skull. The first time scraping rawhide was rough but after spending a week in the taxidermy room learning how to stuff my own pheasant, I no longer had a problem with blood and guts! I have always been grateful to have had her as a teacher and I am sad that she's been called home. Rest in Peace.

With a heavy heart I offer condolences to you Bev and Carol's family. I recall at the ranch and cabin scary sounds at night when going to 'The Biffy' and with flashlight in hand checking to make sure there was not a 'well placed (dead) rattle snake' lying around inside. I can now chuckle about it but at the time nobody went alone, it was 'all for one and one for all'. Carol made from scratch - double strength baking coco powder hot chocolate and snow ice-cream with crushed peppermint candy. Carol's zest for life, putting in a good-hard work day and having a few chuckles along the way has giving many of us precious memories that we will hold even closer. Wilder and Adrian '68'

I'm so sorry for your loss, Bev, and the rest of Carol's family. I met Carol over 50 years ago during her stint as rangler at a Girl Scout camp. Many years passed with great adventures at the ranch. Snow-shoed in turkey for thanksgiving, pranks on the high school kids, buckshot through the biffy roof [I was inside!], building fence together, rides with friends like Jill [Nikki] and many more. What a loss to students, friends, family and community.

Bev, I am so sorry for your enormous loss. I knew Carol in 1968-71, when I was in college and she rescued me from weekends in the dorm by letting me work and play at her cabin. She taught me to be a responsible grown-up and I have many times made decisions by asking myself what Carol would do. She introduced me to skills like fence building, fire-fighting, and cooking for taco-eating contests. The world is just a little duller without Carol. Blessings to you.

Miss Shultz taught us how to work hard and to know what real success was. She taught me never to quit or give up. From 3rd grade PE thru my Senior year, the work was hard and rewards were great. She was my mentor when I did my student teaching and I had the honor of being her assistant coach as well. She never gave up on us and pushed us to be the best and reach our potential. She taught us from the book of life besides textbooks. In the classroom, outdoors doing biology field work, or in athletics, no one will ever surpass her.

I always had great respect for Miss Shultz. I played hockey, Gymnastics, Track, GAA and PE under her guidance. She always called us by our last name and the last time she saw me she did the same. She was tough on us and made us work hard for everything but I believe that built character and gave us a greater appreciation for our accomplishments. I can remember the day I dropped out of her PE class and went to the library due to being bullied by a couple of her teacher's aids (no names mentioned). She came and talked with me about why I had dropped her class and why I needed to finish her class. She agreed to get to the bottom of the issue with the aids and I went back to class and she made sure NOBODY was bullied again. I know she has shaped many people's lives. She also taught my oldest daughter taxidermy, Biology and Health. I will remember her always as an honest and fair person and a funny character, She could tell the best stories and jokes. May she RIP. Thank you Bev for sharing her with all of us over the many years she taught in Adrian. Shawn (Webb) Snyder Class of 77.

Will always appreciate the years I had with Miss Shultz...in health, biology, taxidermy, at the ranch or in the lab. She was sure to teach you more than just the lesson in the textbook! I entered college quite over-prepared for the biology coursework and she had a hand in preparing me for life, as well. She taught and coached my mom, too, so we naturally kept in contact through the years. I remember the last time we visited her in Ola at the ranch...I was barely in the door when she shoved a scrubber at me and pointed me toward what would become the twice-baked potatoes we were having for lunch. Never a dull or idle moment was spent with Miss Shultz. I wasn't ready to say good-bye, but she never did let any of us be the boss. She lived a full, admirable, and distinctive life that I feel fortunate to have been a small part of.

Ms. Shultz was my biology teacher at Adrian High School. She was a phenomenal example to me. She taught me that I could accomplish anything I wanted in my life. One particular memory I have of her was her letting me off the hook for being tardy because I was pulled over by a cop before school. She told the class, "I think Bowen has had a hard enough morning. She worked us hard in Field Hockey but never gave up on us and treated us as individuals even if she knew the six brothers and sisters that went before you. Miss Schultz was a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend. I was one of her first students at Adrian High School. As an athletic student she was my coach for many sports. She introduced us to field hockey and tumbling/gymnastics.....my all time favorites!! She took us to her cabin frequently. She taught us the fine points of coyote calling by giving us the call and promptly locking the door behind us--scared the bageebers out of us--but we loved it!! I have not seen Carol for many years but I think of her often and will continue to think of her fondly. She taught me much about life--much about being my own person. I will always admire her.
