Anna West Obituary

Anna Rebecca West

Anderson, SC

Anna Rebecca West, 76, of Anderson, SC passed away on March 18, 2018, after living fully, even following a diagnosis of cancer. Her final days were in the care of Hospice of the Upstate, as she wished.

Rebecca was born on September 16, 1941 in St. Stephen, SC to the late Reverend Peter L. West and Louise J. West. Grounded in values she learned in her family, she lived a life of faith and dedicated service to others.

Rebecca retired to Anderson in 2011, following a career in which she was an

Associate Pastor at Plymouth Congregational Church in Washington, DC; an officer in the Connecticut and District of Columbia National Guard, retiring with the rank of Colonel; and a manager at a Connecticut insurance company. Reverend West was a graduate of the Yale Divinity School.

In Anderson, she found friends and community at: Boulevard Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir; Quilt of Valor Foundation, where she made quilts for veterans; Family Promise of Anderson, where she supported the mission to eliminate homelessness for children; and Anderson Sertoma Club, where she worked to enhance the Sertoma's camp for youth.

Rebecca is survived, and will be dearly missed, by her son and daughter-in-law, Arnold West and Nadine Francis West; her sisters, Flora Gethers (Joseph) and Sarah West; her brother, Rev. Dr. George L. West (Mary); her nieces, Annette Gethers and Candace West; and her nephews, Joseph Gethers (Liz) and James West, Jr. In addition, she will be lovingly remembered by her extended family and the many people who came to know her warmth, compassion, kindness and her indomitable spirit. Rebecca was predeceased by her brother, Bishop James C. West, Sr. and his wife, Miriam West.

In lieu of flowers, Rebecca asked that donations be made to organizations that address issues about which she cared, including children's health and education, veterans' welfare and cancer research and treatment.

Rev. West's family has made contributions, in her honor, to the Howard University Cancer Center, 2041 Georgia Avenue, Suite 220, NW, Washington, DC 20060, www.cancer.howard.edu and Hospice of the Upstate, 1835 Rogers Road, Anderson, SC 29621, www.hospiceoftheupstate.com.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Boulevard Baptist Church, 700 Boulevard, Anderson, SC.

I was deeply saddened to learned about the passing of Rebecca West. I used to work with Rebecca years ago at Yale New Hospital. When she came back to divinity school she came and look me up. We. had lunch together last time I have seen her. Sarah will keep you and your family in prayer. Rosa Davis Hamden CT

She was the mother of my fraternity brother. One fond memory I have is her welcoming us into her home for a fraternity retreat when she lived in Connecticut. She was an accomplished woman who paved the way for her son's many achievements by example. Ms. West will be truly missed.

Rev. West was my friend and confidant. I just want to thank the family for sharing your loved one with me and my family. She had a spirit of calmness about her that made me believe that everything was going to be alright. She helped me through some of the roughest times in my life with her wisdom and knowledge about life. As we would always say to one another before we would hang up, I Love You Rev. West. You are my angel and will always hold a special place in my heart. Sleep in peace my friend until we meet again.

When a candle goes out so suddenly, the darkness can be overwhelming...but, in the heart there is a glimmer of light - because love holds the memories that gently keep glowing forever. Rest in peace dear friend, rest in peace until we meet again!

Rev. West had a deep interest in service for and education of the community as a whole and especially the sickle cell community. She joined the board of directors of the Sickle Cell Association of the National Capital Area, Inc. (SCANCA, INC.) in 2000 and accepted the position of chairman of the board from 2002 to 2005, Her sweet, calm spirit guided us to new heights. She fed us with her spiritual guidance as she instituted our first Prayer Breakfast. It was a joy to witness the love and peace she bestowed through her beautiful smile and soft, warm voice. We extend condolences to her family and pray that God will give them strength and peace as they forge ahead.

COL (Ret) West served with distinction and honor in the District of Columbia National Guard. As the State Chaplain for the DCNG I had the joy of working along side her as she worked in another capacity but did so with class and competency. We thank her for service to the men and women of the DCNG, the United States Army and her many civilian roles as well. My prayers are with her family and loved ones. Chaplain (BG-DC)(Retired) D.
