What a blessing it has been in my life to have known and been friends with Dr. Jack McConnell...I think about often and regularly (including today) tell others about his extraordinary life of accomplishment and service to others...
After first meeting him as a 27 year old on a golf course in Florida in 1994, we became good friends for a number of years and I was fortunate to visit with him on multiple occasions at his home, the VIM clinic and the Charlotte airport (among other places) in the years that followed...
A powerful memory for me is my visit with him at his home in the spring of 2012 and the chance to introduce my five children to a truly great man...His health and attentiveness had begun to slip by that time, but Mary Ellen was so gracious in allowing us to stop by...His level of alertness and recollection that day was beautiful to behold...
That was the last time I ever saw my friend, by I am certain I have thought of and spoken with others about him at least 100 times since then including in public speeches and interviews...
I have been blessed to meet many accomplished men and women in my life, but few, if any, have provided me with such a clear example of servant leadership...
I could write a book detailing the memories of conversations about a myriad of topics including his childhood, his love for his wife, his unabashed pride for each of his children, the similarity of a pig pancreas to that of a human pancreas, the beauty and thrill of an African safari, the importance of fighting hard for things you believe in, his golfing at Augusta with "my friend Sam (Nunn)", his work as a selector for White House Fellows, his inspiration for starting the first VIM clinic, his hope to one day get his hands on Charles Darwin´s research slides and outfit a research vessel to take down to the Galápagos Islands where he wanted to take new slides for comparison, etc, etc, etc...
Thank you, Jack, for helping to make me the man that I have become...
As Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote many years ago;
"Lives of all great men remind us
We can make our lives sublime
And departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time"
Jack left indelible footprints for many to follow and the world is a much better place because he did...

I still think of Jack with his talent for "spoon on the nose". Happy memories . Bless you all.

Mary Ellen, our sympathy to you and your family on Jack's death. What a wonderful gift from God his life was. I will be sending a memorial in his name to The volunteer program he started. My daughter, Patti, also sends her condolences.
