Dottie Rambo Obituary

Singers, songwriters fondly recall queen of gospel music By Jennifer Hewlett

She wrote songs with verses that would make Shakespeare smile, and when she was on a stage, she owned it, her friends said Monday.

They were talking about Dottie Rambo, perhaps the most prolific songwriter of her time and the greatest songwriter to come out of Kentucky.

The death of Rambo, who was killed Sunday when her tour bus crashed in Missouri, has affected people throughout the world, especially those in the gospel music industry.

Rambo, 74, was known as the queen of gospel music. Not only was she widely known for her own recordings, but some of the more than 2,500 songs she wrote were recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Whitney Houston, Vince Gill and Dolly Parton. It has been said that there’s hardly a modern hymnal that doesn’t have at least one Dottie Rambo song in it.

“It was hard to sing gospel music and not record a Dottie Rambo song,” said gospel singer Kenny Bishop, adding that his family’s first album included Rambo’s song Too Much To Gain To Lose.

“Everybody knew Dottie’s music,” he said. “I’ve been around Dottie when there were bigger celebrities in the room and she didn’t have to make her way to them — they made their way to her.”

Christian songwriter and comedian Aaron Wilburn said that Rambo broke barriers.

“She took gospel into country; she took it into pop ... I know in the Christian field she’s the greatest female writer, probably of all time,” Wilburn said.

“To me, she was the Dolly Parton of gospel music,” country music singer Wynonna Judd said in a statement. “She was effervescent and lit up a room when she entered it. Dottie had it — that charisma and ability to fill a space with her smile. ... Her gift will live on in the hearts of many.”

“She gave us many new songs, which had a major impact on our career at the time,” recalled Oak Ridge Boys lead singer Duane Allen.

Rambo, who was born Joyce Reba Lutrell in Madisonville, learned to play guitar while listening to the Grand Ole Opry on WSM radio in Nashville. She performed with The Gospel Echoes and later The Singing Rambos, then The Rambos, with her former husband, Buck Rambo, and their daughter Reba Rambo- McGuire. Early in her career, Dottie Rambo wrote songs under contract with a publishing company owned by Jimmie Davis, a former governor of Louisiana who was also a popular country and gospel recording artist.

Rambo had a “haunting” singing voice,” Bishop said. “She loved to speak when she sang, and that was one of her trademarks ... I think sometimes she just felt like what she had to say was more important than how she was saying it ... It had a very penetrating effect.”

Rambo’s 1968 album It’s The Soul Of Me won a Grammy Award. She was an inductee of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. In 2000, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers honored her with a Lifetime Achievement Award. The Christian Country Music Association gave her the Songwriter of the Century Award in 1994.

She won a Gospel Music Association Dove Award for I Go To The Rock, which Whitney Houston sang in the movie The Preacher’s Wife.

“I have a hard time receiving awards or rewards,” she said in 2006, just before she was inducted into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. “But I can tell you this thing will be the one that drives me to tears because it’s my home state.”

Actress and comedian Lily Tomlin, a close friend, was especially distraught by Rambo’s death.

“You can imagine how shocking it is to lose her this way. She was just such a bright presence in our lives,” Tomlin said.

She said that Rambo visited with her mother when she was dying and sang at her mother’s funeral.

“She couldn’t have been more loving with my mother. She’d pray with my mother and look after her. They had a very similar spiritual sensibility.”

Tomlin said a lot of people don’t have any idea just how much of an impact Rambo had in the music industry.

Gospel performer Jeff Easter recalled Rambo talking about her mother asking her to sing one of her songs in church.

“She wrote a song called Mama’s Teaching Angels How To Sing. Her mama was still living ... Her mama would say, ‘I want you to sing that song about me teaching angels how to sing,’ ” he said with a laugh.

I have such fond memories of Dottie. I was a very young child when I was introduced to her music. I attended a little Pentecostal Church in a cotton field in rural north Alabama. One of the soloist that attended, Sister Cathy Sherrill, would often sing one of Dottie's songs. I would rush home and get my momma to write down the words for me as I recalled them from the church service. I kept the words to these songs in a binder and would pull them out as I would sing them in my room. My momma would here me and would just sit and listen without letting me know she was eavesdropping on my secret singing. I absolutely loved any song by Dottie and memorized hundreds of them. My momma's favorite was Come Spring and was asked by my momma to sing it at her funeral. I remember I practiced and was always ready to sing for her. I thought it would be better for me to sing it for her while she was alive. In 1998 I prepared a tribute to my momma, Annie Ruth Weeks. I sang the song to a church full of my family members who all were moved to tears. That was my mom's proudest moment of her life and she often shared this with family and friends. I would sing this song for her every mother's day from then on until her passing in 2009. But unfortunately I was too heartbroken to sing the song at her funeral. Instead I asked another Dottie Rambo fan, Sister Cornelia Hutto, to sing it at her funeral. I am so thankful for Dottie and all of her beautiful music. We will never have another like her and I am sure she is teaching God's Angels to sing. I know she is in Heaven with my momma and they are praising God and singing all of those wonderful songs. I love you Dottie and miss you and your music more everyday.

This is way late but just found this site. Dottie Rambo influenced my Christian walk all my life. I am slightly older than she was & I lovèd the Rambos.
Dotties songs & lyric are truly anointed to this day. Only God the Father knows the reason He took her when He did.
The words are so poignant and full of grace as when she penned them. She's surely been missed all these years

I listen to Dotties songs about every day or night but I never miss listening for 30 min prior to going to church. Her music is so anointed and speaks to my heart. I do my worship prior to church with her music then I arrive in time for a great service. Our church does the upbeat tempo contemporary that this old Pentecostal just can´t get use to.
I know you´re teaching the angles all your songs.

First of All I want to say my condolences to the family. I didn't know Dottie. But just listening to her music and her testimony's and watching the things she went through on youtube. She has inspired me to start singing again. I have been singing my whole life. Even as a child my dad put my on the pulpit and let me sing. I'm 41 yrs old now. And I hope to only be half the woman and as close to the Lord as Dottie was and still is. Listening to all her testimony's and the things she has been through, Has had me on my knee's talking to the Lord more. I am a christian but I need my walk with him to be close again. I have only written one song in my life.. my mother put the music to it. And that's the 1st one I'm gonna start with. I have bad stage fright. But I see it this way. If Dottie could still get up there and sing for the Lord with all the pain she was in so can I. No matter what she praised God through it all. And I can't wait til one day I get to sing in that heavenly Choir with her. I know she's been gone a long time. But, I can still imagine that in my mind. God Bless

I wanted to say how Dottie affected my life. Hearing her sing and talk never failed to lift me up and I wanted to live my life as she did ..serving the LORD. She was my heroine . She was beautiful inside and out. My only wish is that I wish I could ve met her and told her how she influenced my life and I am sure many many more. Goodbye Dottie I will always miss you but I will never forget how you influenced my life. I pray that when I get to Heaven I will meet you there because I know thats where you are. You influenced many people by your faith and by being yourself. This world has lost a wonderful friend and there will never be another like you. Maybe you can write a song now about how it was to see Jesus. Even though you didnt know me I really loved and identified with you especially about being in so much pain. At least I am glad for you because your pain is all gone. Will you meet me by the river when I get there so we can sing together about Heaven. I will always miss you. With love , Maxine Spain Jones.at age71

I grew up listening to The Singing Rambos. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in the early ‘70’s and would play the live album constantly while walking around the house singing, crying, praying and cleaning. Thanks to The Singing Rambos and God for helping (us) through that valley. I feel today my mom and Dottie are singing in Heaven!!!

My name is Kim Murray. The very first time that I saw dottie Rambo, my mother was watching her on trinity broadcasting. I had accepted Christ a few years before that and was experiencing one of the most painful times in my life. All I could see were dottie and Jan crouch singing their hearts out as if they were angels up in Heaven. I remember u can get wishing that I had halfof the joy that they seemed to have. I Remember being quite upset with them because I could not understand why they were not as miserable as I was. many years later, I heard dottie say that she got through all of this mess because the JOY OF THE LORD IS MY STENGTH. God has truly blessed me out of that horrible depression and I pray that as I continue to grow in His grace that I will be able to say those words as bold as Dottie Rambo did. THE JOY OF THE LORD IS MY STRENGTH. it's shocked and saddened by the news of her tragic death. I'm finally beginning to see her as human just like me.

Dottie and my mother were couisins who grew up in Kentucky and my whole life I listened to stories and Dotties wonderful music. I can't imagine my life without those memories. My mother was a gifted singer and guitarist herself and I remember her being begged into singing Dotties songs in our little church in Kentucky.
Both have gone on to meet Jesus and no doubt teaching the angels how to sing.

I found this guest book while looking for another article on Dottie. DOTTIE RAMBO ... what can you say? The GREATEST WRITER of all time, bar none! My life time hero. My friend for the last three years that you spent on this side of eternity. I miss you, Dottie, more than I could ever express. You were the "Master of Words" ... I can only put forth a feeble attempt at expression of the loss that I feel with your absence from my life. I have known your music all my life, fell in love with you and your music at the age of 14 when the LORD filled me with the Holy Ghost. I was blessed with the opportunity to try to express to you what you have meant to me through the years. I was blessed with your FRIENDSHIP for 3 years ... I remember thinking when I watched the last interview you did ... you put your hand over your heart, as you made a comment ... I thought, "I'm in there. You took me to heaven in your heart, you accepted me into your heart and made me your friend." WHAT A BLESSING !!! The hours spent talking to you over those three years of friendship held SO MUCH. You poured your thoughts and feelings into our conversations and I did the same. You told me more than once ..."Cornelia, I feel like I've always known you." I felt the same. Of course, I had always known "of you" ... but getting to know you as my friend was a dream come true. Thanks for being my friend and "thanks for the music" ! I love you and I'll miss you until I see you again in heaven. Cornelia

At thirteen I first saw Dottie and the family in a singing at my high school. Reba had just started singing with the family and Kenny Parker was the piano player. It was my first real Southern Gospel Singing and I was hooked on the Rambo sound from the first song. I have carried Dottie's songs in my heart now for 40 years. What a privilege to be there when they inducted her into the Southern Gospel Hall of Fame. To be in the audience at her first public appearance, returning to a solo career a few years ago, was a blessing from Heaven. I sat on the front row at the Ernest Tubb Midnight
Jamborine while she made fun of me taking photos of her on stage. What a special blessing we all had among us. I had traveled to many places to be in the audience supporting Dot's ministry. My last flight to see her, I sat in a quiet chapel and viewed a casket covered with red roses. I sat for hours. The memorial of remembrance brought the closure of an awesome spirit for me. I still have 40 years of songs in my heart to continue cherishing. Until HE Comes.

my sympthay to the family. reba, i have loved and grownwith you and your mom. i watched her in pain and received so much inspiration. i have had 3 back surgeries failed and in severe pain sometimes unable to get out of bed and facing a 4th along with other problems in health but her firm grip on God and walk thru her back problems gave me such inspiration and even I wanted to die due to pain and when I heard her testimony and her song written in her desperation called Who's gonna teach my children's children? who;s gonna teach my little grandchild? that ga ve me such hope and renewed strength to carry on. We will definitely meet in Heaven and I know taht all those gone before were waiting on Heaven's shore with arms wide open and they are having a hallelujah meeting in Heaven around God's throne. what delight and awe this thought brings that one day soon we too "shall behold him" --debbie riley po box 602 jourdanton texas 78026 Pastor-Jordan's crossing christian center in jourdanton texas. love and prayers be with those hurt and those grieving.

Dottie Rambo, Eva Mae Lefebre, Vestal Goodman, were household names when I was growing up. The Lord trained me as a young girl thru their music. I couldn't afford voice lessons but thru them God taught me. I have sung their music for 43 years. I feel like I have lost a best friend. God be with you Reba as you carry on.

Our sympathy goes out to Dottie Rambo's family. She has gone to her reward and is in no more pain or suffering. It was so sudden and shocking which made it more difficult.
May God comfort you in this your time of grieving...

To Dottie's family and close friends. I unfortunately never met her - I am from Johannesburg, South Africa, but I have a copy of her interview with Bill Gaither on DVD and with Sandi Patti singing "We will behold him" and of course one of the Gaither members singing "He looked beyond my fault and saw my need". How unbeleivable awesome Dottie was and to think she is teaching the angel to sing now (as it says in the song she wrote about her mama). Can you imagine Jesus looking down into Dottie's beautiful eyes right now and welcoming her into His Kingdom? And Dottie will look into her saviour's eye and know that the pain on earth is over but it was all worth it.
I mourn with her family - may the memories they cherish sustain them thru these dark days.
God bless you
Debbie, Sandton, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Dottie Rambo is one Gospel singer I will miss the most. Her music was and still is an inspiration to us all, because her music ministers to the heart, and we can feel her heart through all of her music. Now Dottie Rambo is singing with the angels, and Heaven has a new shining star for all the angels to behold.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Dottie. Her songs are my favorites (I have no one particular song). I pray God's blessings on the family in this time of sorrow. I know she is singing up in Heaven around the throne of God. May God bless Reba and the grandchildren. She will be missed although her songs will live on in the hearts of those who love Southern Gospel Music.

Death is not sad
it's a time for elation.
A joyous transition
the soul's emigration
to a place
where the soul's
safe and free
to live with God
through eternity.
