Mildred Watson Obituary

May 23, 1932 - December 22, 2020 Mildred Watson, aged 88, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday December 22, 2020 at UCLA Medical Center Santa Monica. She was born May 23, 1932 in Greenwood, Mississippi and lived in Cypress, California for 53 years. In her youth, she decided that she would rise above her station without losing her connection or commitment to her roots in Greenwood. She received her Bachelor's of Science degree from Tougaloo College, three Masters of Science degrees from Ohio State University, California State University, Fullerton, and Claremont McKenna College. She received her PhD in education from Claremont McKenna College. Mildred worked as a biology teacher and later a college counselor at Roosevelt High School in Gary, Indiana, Manuel Arts High School in Los Angeles, and Los Alamitos High School. She finished her career as a student-teacher supervisor at California State University, Dominguez Hills. Beloved by all, she has been a staple of her Cypress community for decades. She was very active in the St. Irenaeus Church, Links Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., 100 Black Women of Orange County, and several other charity organizations. She was a beacon of light in this world, greatly impacting the lives of all those around her. Her spirit and memory will continue in each and every one of those touched by her greatness. She was passionate about education as a means for betterment, and her children and grandchildren are living out her legacy. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Edward, her two children, Dr. Karol Watson MD, PhD and Keith Watson, three of her seven siblings, her nieces and nephews in Memphis, Tennessee and Greenwood, Mississippi, and her four grandchildren, Georgetown graduate Afton Branche-Wilson, Miami University student Logan Branche, and Stanford University students Kaycee and Corrie Branche. We ask that you send your prayers to her family and live life with kindness in your heart, as Mildred would have wanted.

I was thinking of you the other day. I miss you overall but around Christmas you would send the prettiest cards letting us know how everyone was doing . Mom and I saved them and we would hang them on the door along with cards from other family and friends ....ongoing memories. Love you Aunt Mildred

Mrs. Watson was a beloved teacher at Los Alamitos High School. I had the opportunity to be one of her teacher's aids many years ago. I thought of her today and decided to look her up on the internet. I was so saddened to hear of her passing. Mrs. Watson was not just a teacher, she was a mentor of how to live one's life. The world is a lesser place without her joyful presence.

Aunt Mildred, sister to our deceased mother Daisy Livingston, modeled grace of character, gave unconditional support and was fiercely determined to lift up everyone with whom she had contact. Among our earliest and fondest memories are of the times she lived with us in our parents' home in Greenwood, MS. She was like a an older sister to us though she was biologically our aunt. She made us better human beings for knowing her. We will be forever grateful to have loved and been loved by her. Our hearts go out to Uncle Edward and our cousins. ---

Dr. Mildred Watson was an exceptional member of the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Inc. She had many qualities that made her the special person that she was. Dr. Watson had intelligence, wit, charm and a caring, kind, warm and loving spirit that made her a valuable member of NCBW-OC. The loss of Dr. Watson and her contributions will be felt by the members of NCBW-OC.

It is times like these when we realize that there are no words to express our deepest thoughts, no way to calm our hearts as we begin to understand there will be no more Mondays sitting around the table sharing a meal and chatting about the world and how we would fix it. No more soft smiles or chuckles at something she found funny. It is hard not to wish for time to discuss one more book or play one more game together but, our Mildred was not just a good friend, she was a loving wife, a determined mom, a caring grandmother and, a woman of strong faith. There is no doubt that she has been welcomed into the new home she prepared for throughout her life and that her kind and generous spirit will be with her family and friends forevermore. It was a privilege to call her my friend and to see that her goodness lives on through her children and grandchildren. My deepest sympathies to You all.

Mildred and I were best friends throughout life. We became best friends during our Jr. High School days in Greenwood, MS and remained best friends until her passing. We went to Tougaloo College together as freshmen and lived together as roommates. I transferred to Miner Teachers College in Washington, DC my sophomore year; however, we continued our close friendship through frequent calls and letters, supporting each other and lending support to each other’s children and families. We laughed and reminisced over the good old days and we enjoyed sharing our proud grandmother stories. Mildred and I remained best friends over the years and up to this present day. We were connected through our bonds of sisterhood in Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Links, Inc. but our sisterhood of memories since childhood created a lifetime bond. I will miss you my dear friend. I plan to meet you in heaven.

To many she was Mildred Watson or Dr. Watson. For me she's my Aunt Mildred. She has a beautiful heart and spirit. Loves her family. We looked forward to her visits to Memphis. Sitting in the kitchen after breakfast with Aunt Mildred and my mom hearing stories of when they were younger are fond memories. She was very passionate about education. She always encouraged me to "get your education Missy" Although I lived so far away. I could feel her loving gentle nudge whenever I wanted to quit school. But hard work paid off. I am forever grateful to have her in my life, a part of my educational journey and I am proud to also call her my Soror. She is the reason I pledged Delta Sigma Theta. I will truly miss you Auntie. Thank you for everything.

My deepest sympathies to the Watson family. My “Delta Dear” was one of the kindest and sweetest people I have ever met. She personified, was the very ethos, of what an educated Christen lady is. Being in her presence made others what to emulate her manner and be, just like Mildred. Her supportive and positive influence impacted others in ways that are her living legacyrest well my Soror.

My heartfelt condolence to the Watson family. My prayers are with you as you grieve the loss of your beloved wife, mother and family member.

I only knew Mildred for a brief time as I was pledging Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her warmth and guinness , Immediately reminded me of my great aunt and aunt who were my role models for pledging Delta Sigma Theta. Whenever we would meet, over the years, it was as if there was no time separation. She was always her kind ,welcoming friendly, self. She made the world a kinder more accepting place, by her presence and loving attributes. Rest in peace Soror. You were the essence of Delta Love.
