Josephine Troy Gleis

1912 - 2018

September 5, 1912 - January 14, 2018 Josephine Herbert Gleis has passed away at the age of 105. She was still living in her home of many years in Newport Beach. Josephine was born in Cleveland in 1912. She moved to Los Angeles in 1924 and attended Los Angeles High School. She married Gavin S. Herbert in 1931 and had two children, Gavin Herbert Jr., and Marilyn Hausman (deceased). She leaves an extended family including 8 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Josephine remarried Carl Troy in 1962 and lived in New York until he passed in 1974. She returned to Newport Beach and married Stan Gleis in 1977. She has been living on Linda Isle since Stan passed away. One of her areas of interest became thoroughbred horses. At the age of 75 she was breeding and racing over 30 horses including "Fly Till Dawn" the winner of numerous high stakes races. She created the Josephine Herbert Gleis Foundation in 1999 and was the principle donor in the creation of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at UC Irvine. She suffered from macular degeneration and helped fund research in that disease. Josephine has also supported Hoag Hospital and funded the creation of the Marilyn Herbert Hausman Advanced Technology Pavilion in 2008. Her son, Gavin Herbert, Jr., is a co-founder of Allergan which is now celebrating 70 years in business and specializes in ophthalmology. Up until her final days, Josephine remained engaged and a positive influence on her entire family. She will be greatly missed. Private services will be held.
