William Howard Sr. Obituary

Well known and respected Western banker, William (Bill) W Howard Sr. (83) died peacefully in his sleep January 27, 2018 at the Mesilla Valley Hospice - La Posada in Las Cruces, NM.

Born July 14, 1934 in Pueblo, Colorado to Walter Clarence Howard and Columbena (Harris). He is survived by his wife of 33 years Diana; and children William Howard Jr. (Pueblo), Tamara Kowalski (Parker), Tracy (Larisa) Howard, (Colorado Springs), Timothy M. Howard (Colorado Springs), stepson Gavin (Sarah) Cashman, (Caldicot, England); plus 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his son, James Patrick, parents, Walter and Columbena Howard and sister Barbara Jean Howard Anzlovar Yaklich.
Following his high school graduation in 1952 from Central High in Pueblo, Colorado, he joined the Marines and served as an aircraft mechanic during Korea. Upon his return home, he worked with his father at the C.F. & I Steel Mill before turning to banking where he rapidly rose through the ranks, becoming one of the top banking operations officers in the West. Some of the steps along the way were at the First National Bank, Pueblo, Central Bank of Denver, First Interstate Bank of Denver (formerly American National), Metro Bank, Central Bank of Colorado Springs, Central Bancorporation, The Bank of San Diego, San Diego, California; Eaton Bank, Greeley, and Republic Bank Bountiful, Utah. In between he served as Director and Treasurer of the Rocky Mountain Automated Clearing House; Chairman of the Denver Clearing House Operating Committee; and member of the Federal Reserve Bank on the Denver Pricing Committee.

Finally retiring in 2001 he turned his attention to pecans after buying a small pecan farm named after his pet donkey Frosty in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Memorials may be given to the Las Cruces Rescue Mission; or any local rescue mission, as Bill always had a soft spot for anyone down on their luck.

Per his request there will be no services. His ashes will be spread in the spring among the fields and hills were he played as a boy in Pueblo, Colorado.

So sorry to hear of Bill's passing! Although I only worked with him for a short time, I could tell that he was a very knowledgeable and practical person who knew what was important, and also the most efficient way to get things done. He liked to keep things as simple as possible. It was obvious that his wife and family were very important to him. Best wishes and deepest condolences. Jim Peters - SLC

"Billy" was a great older brother to his little sister, Barbara, with whom I spent a lot of time as a child with the oversight of Grandma Harris and Bena nearby. I recall Billy being sent to "get her home" when Barbara was at my house on more than one occasion. Thanks for posting Billy's military picture; I warmly remember it sitting proudly on the piano atop Grandma Harris's crocheted doilies at 301 Quincv. The Howard family was a wonderful, kind mix of Irish and Italian (great food and loud voices!) and they have continued to provide me some warm, wonderful memories over these last 70 years. My sympathies to you in your loss.

Tammy,
Wanted to say how heart sorry I am to hear of your Dad,s passing.
I know there are no words to ease the fracture this loss brings, but I pray that somewhere in your grief you find a sense of solace in that his spirit lives on and he is free of pain.
You are a wonderful daughter and your love resides within his soul, like a warm blanket on his journey to the heavens.
May you never stop believing in the gift of eternal love and light.
His spirit is with you, talk to him and know he hears and knows the contents of your tears and heart.
My sympathy to you and your family.

You were a great example to me always! Thank you for always being there for me and Grandma Howard. My prayer as I get older, is that I am that great example of strength and love to others that you and dad always showed. I Love you and will see you all in heaven someday!

To Diana, his children and granchildren. I am so thankful that you were all blessed by this amazing man that always showed unconditional love. I want to say that was the Howard in him...lol. So sad to know that he was the last of my daddys generation but he finished well!!!

May the Lord embrace you and fill you with his love and may He comfort you during this time of loss. May we all follow in their steps of loving those that are sometimes hard to love, being a example to others, showing respect and having integrity. Most of all always being there for those in need and our family. This comes as a great loss in my heart as well, but i know they would be proud to know that we are following in their footsteps.
All my love,
Julie
