David Fleischaker Obituary

Fleischaker, David Spritz,

73, died in a tragic auto accident on Monday, October 10, 2016.

He was born February 7, 1943, and grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Betty Jane Fleischaker and the late Leopold Fleischaker.

David was a casual intellect who loved history, politics and his book club. He was a father to many, no matter relation, raising a blended house of eight children and coached many baseball and soccer teams. He penned a weekly column in the 1980s that ran in the Courier-Journal for seven years that recounted his kids' most every teenage antic.

He was a doting and active grandfather who loved to play games, especially cribbage or backgammon, with anyone who would join him. Always loving to be around people, he was an avid duplicate bridge player and achieved Silver Life Master status.

David was a consummate racquetball player, taking trophies home from the Senior Olympics and annual Ike Gumer tournaments, usually against much younger opponents.

David started his career in inner city youth education, and continued helping people by assisting first-time homebuyers and working with community housing development organizations to increase affordable housing opportunities.

David loved fiercely and considered family his legacy. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his bride, Patricia Buckley, his eight children: Philip (Hiroko), Stuart (Susan), Eleanor (Peter), Rebecca, Greg (Celia), Fred (Kathleen), Kirk (Whitney) and Laura, and 21 grandchildren; and three siblings, Jon (Kim), Marc (Phyllis) and Beth. He also is survived by Pat's children, Michelle, Daniel (Angie) and Matthew (Kim), and her eight grandchildren.

Memorial services will be 3:30 p.m. Friday, October 14th at The Temple, 5101 US Hwy 42. Visitation will begin after 2:00 p.m. Gifts in David's memory can be made to River City Housing, Jewish Community Center or The Temple.

David was our real estate agent when we bought our Crescent Hill home years ago. I saw him often around town after that. He was a gracious, lovely man, and I am deeply saddened by this news. My husband and I send our thoughts for healing to David's family.

David Spritz Fleischaker was very cool and professional. He was passionate to serve various housing programs and the city of Louisville was blessed to have him serving through the years. This is a tremendous loss for the family and friends that knew him.

Today I'm remembering David Fleischaker, an extraordinary man who died in a car accident this week. I'm especially remembering those I know who feel his loss most profoundly, Greg and Rebecca and the extended Fly clan that lived in that full house in the Highlands. Mr. Fly, as he was known to the kids in our high school and the neighborhood, was an engaged parent, caring coach, expert racquetball player, valued advisor, esteemed professional a list that could go on and on. Mr. Fly helped guide me through and beyond some of the more challenging years in my life and remained a friend and mentor to me through college, jobs, marriage, kids and beyond. Many dozens of other people my age, but also much younger and much older valued Mr. Fly as a central figure in their lives over the years. I was captivated by the spirit with which he approached life complicated as it might be always with a wink and a smile. He seemed to have a wisdom, an understanding of things the rest of us could only catch glimpses of, which he would share kindly and generously, but the humility to share it only when it was welcome. Although I'll remember how boldly he would challenge Louisville's best athletes to a game of racquetball, his kindnesses to my own father, and the wisdom he shared with me over the years, most enduring for me is his identity as a father and the hub of a vast and vibrant family. That family still lives and grows, and his spirit is well and alive in all of those individuals and families that were born from his wink and his smile. I'm grateful for having Mr. Fly in my life and will keep him with me forever. My deepest condolences to his entire family.

My deepest sympathy to all of David's family and friends. He was my realtor when I lived in Louisville. But more importantly, the work he did for affordable housing and for organizations like Guardiacare (formerly St. William Center) will be remembered for years to come. Truly a loss.

David was as sharp on the basketball court as he was in the classroom. We graduated together at Seneca High School. He enjoyed life as much as anyone I have ever met. I am so glad I got to talk to him at our 50th class reunion, still one of the nicest guys.

Dave's tragic death has saddened me deeply. I always enjoyed his company on the racquetball court at the JCC. He was a pleasure to play with and against and will be terribly missed by our group of players.

Dear Pat & Mary Jane,

I was so shocked to hear about David's tragic accident. As his opponent at the bridge table, I found him to sharp-minded but very affable.

I can only imagine, Pat, the depth of your grief, having only married David one month ago.

Your family & friends, including those at the bridge center, will help you to continue without your David.

I was so sad to learn of the loss of David. He was a wonderful neighbor at Rough River. I learned so much about being a good parent and grandparent from David. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family. He certainly will be missed by all who knew him.

My wife and I just met David and Pat as we shared a shuttle service from Manhattan to LaGuardia Airport in NYC just a about a week ago. He was a very kind and intelligent soul that could comfortably talk to and listen to others opinions about politics, life and religion. We will continue to lift up your family in our prayers, and ask for God's Peace to be with you.

I worked with David over the years on several real estate transactions for River City Housing, Inc. David was always such a great guy to work with and really cared about the people he was helping to make home ownership a reality instead of just a dream. I was so saddened to hear of his death.

It was not until now, in reading his obituary, that I realized that I went to middle and high school with his sons, Philip and Stuart. My deepest condolences to David's family. The legacy of his kind heart will continue to live on.
