What I wrote 9 years ago, upon learning of Art's passing, remains even more true -- today. The card from his memorial service remains on my mirror where I can see it every morning. Art was among the most talented and best human beings I've ever known. His contributions to the lives of so many people will rarely be, if ever, matched.

Art was my first friend and I was his. We met on Hillsboro Road where we both lived when we were 4 years old. I have never had a better friend. We went to Lourdes and Trinity together for 13 years and shared everything it was possible for two guys to share who were not biological brothers. But in every other way he was a brother to me. And to my mom, Roseanne Bauer Aton, Art was son # 4. I loved Art and even more, admired everything about him. He was always the guy in our class I looked up to the most. I knew if Art was doing it, it was ok. Moreover, he inspired me always to be a better person. Even after high school when we went away to school and I moved away from Louisville more or less permanently, we stayed in touch and still saw each other. Art came out to Utah with Drew, and we did a memorable float down the San Juan River. It was so typical of Art that he and Bill Bates occasionally took my aging father, Charlie, out to lunch to talk about the old days. I am grieving for my dear, dear friend.

We knew Art back when Deanna worked at Bacon's and Art was in law school. He was a great guy; we always enjoyed being around him. We are out of town and won't be back till September so we could not be at the services. Please accept our deepest sympathy. Bo and Rita Williams

I first met Art just a few years ago while working on a legal matter for Humana. My office is in Ohio and every time I saw Art in Louisville he was very welcoming and friendly. His job kept him very busy but he always made time to say hello and learn more about the projects for which we were asked to provide legal advice. He knew the big picture yet he enjoyed learning some of the details too. I enjoyed getting to know Art and I was saddened to hear of his untimely death. He will be missed by those of us who got to work with him over the years.

Rhonda, Kat and Claire,
Our sympathy and prayers are with you. Art never met a stranger. Successful, yet humble and blessed with the grace of god.
Assumption's "Rocket Man" was a fixture at every basketball game. We all had such a blast.

I only spoke to Art on the phone, we never met in person to my loss. I worked for Humana in New Orleans when Katrina hit. Art called me out of the blue just to offer his assistance if there was anything he could do for me. I was a complete stranger to him at the time. That was truly amazing.

My sincere condolences. Art was an AMAZING man and accepted me into your family many years ago. The wisdom that he shared with me regarding having passion for all that you do both professionally and personally will be with me ALWAYS! When I returned to Louisville Art gave me a book on Louisville that I will cherish forever as he encouraged me to explore Louisville in a different way then I had as an undergraduate student. I loved talking sports with Art (although, we were faithful to rival schools, he understood and appreciated my passion as I did his!). I will miss him at family dinners, holidays and birthdays, but he will always be present in my heart!

Dear Rhonda, I out of town on vacation, and frustrated that I will not be able to convey my sympathies in person.
Art and I spent a lot of time together during my Humana days. He was always a guy you could count on for his competence and readiness to provide good counsel. He was also a great friend and ready to share a story or a laugh.
I know you and the kids must be grieving deeply, and you have my thoughts and sympathy.

I was deeply saddened to hear about Art’s passing. Art was one of the most kind, gentle, and generous men I have ever met. He was a man I greatly admired as I’m sure others did too. I know your loss seems insurmountable now and hope you find some comfort in knowing how blessed you were to have him in your lives. My heart aches for the entire family. Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I was honored to have shared my sixteen years as Jefferson County Attorney with many wonderful, talented and special people. The 'graduates' from those years have had a remarkable impact on our local, state and federal government. That list is long and impressive.
Others, like Art Hipwell, graduated from the office to make significant contributions in private industry. His contributions for many years as General Counsel and Senior Vice President to Humana have been enormous in helping steer Humana into a nationwide operation and an industry leader. His accomplishments are unparalleled -- a critical thinker, a man of pride, immense integrity, excellence and determination – was Art Hipwell.
But, as his remarkably written obituary testifies – this workplace contribution is only a very small part of the ‘real’ Art Hipwell -- even more important significant are the qualities that make a ‘real man’ – humanity, humility and family. Art had a wonderful love and compassion for his family. It meant the world to him. If you were a friend of Art Hipwell, you had a real friend – and they were numerous. Being a friend of Art Hipwell also meant that he was a ‘friend of your family.’ He always wanted to know how your family was doing and was always concerned about you – and your life.
Art Hipwell was a truly special person – and what a better world and city it would be if there were more Art Hipwells, who were willing to share their talents, hopes and dreams with so many folks.
Norma and I will miss Art, immensely, as will we all. Both Norma and I also consider ourselves as really fortunate to have worked with and known this very special person.
Our prayers are with the Hipwell family and we hope each of you can gain strength in this time of loss, by realizing how fortunate you have been to have shared a family with Art Hipwell.

I have known Art Hipwell since he joined C&L in 1971. Later, after he went to law school, he became my client at Humana. When I left Louisville in 1988, Humana gave me a caricature that set forth a listing of "The Boys". Art was one of those "boys". I will always have fond memories of Art and I pray that God comforts his family during this difficult time.
