Luther Barcus Obituary

CHELMSFORD - Luther Carroll Barcus, 74, of Chelmsford, a professor at the former Lowell Technological Institute (now UMass Lowell), died Monday, Sept. 23, at Lowell General Hospital. He was the husband of Hazel May (Hulse) Barcus, with whom he would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary Nov. 25.

He was born in Spring Lake, N.J., on April 5, 1928, a son of the late Luther and Ruth (Lister) Barcus. He graduated from Manasquan High School in 1944, and earned his bachelor's degree in physics from Delaware University and his master's degree from the University of Miami.

Prior to becoming a Merchant Marine in New Jersey, Mr. Barcus served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

Until his retirement in 1985, he worked as a professor at Lowell Technological Institute.

Besides his wife, survivors include three sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel S. and Anne (Cayer) Barcus of Lowell, and Edward A. and David J. Barcus, both of Chelmsford; a daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia C. and Douglas Chin of Marietta, Ga.

He also leaves two brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Betty Barcus of Vero Beach, Fla. and John and Catherine Barcus of Point Pleasant, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Sarah and her husband Christopher Maichalik of Lowell, Catherine Barcus of Lowell, and John, Stephen, Kesia, Sophia and Daniel Chin, all of Marietta, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren, Timothy and Jordan Maichalik of Lowell.

He was also the father of Cathie Barcus of Chelmsford, who died in 1997.

A private funeral service was held yesterday, with burial in Fairview Cemetery.
