Nancy Crewe Obituary

Nancy M. Crewe, Ph. D. East Lansing Nancy Crewe died Thursday, April 7, 2011; she was 71 years of age. Throughout her long and distinguished career, Nancy cared deeply about people with disabilities and the physical and psychological aspects that affected their lives. Through her scholarship, Nancy made landmark contributions to understanding the disability experience and enhancing the quality of rehabilitation services to individuals with significant disabilities. Her work in functional assessment helped re-orient the focus of assessment from a deficit-oriented, medical model, to a capacity orientated functional model-foreshadowing and contributing to major shifts in public policy by nearly two decades. Similarly, her recognition of the importance of the independent living movement resulted in co-authoring the preeminent book on this subject that captured and advanced a fundamental policy and paradigm shift, and brought her international recognition by consumers, advocates and professionals. Her 20-year longitudinal study of a cohort of persons with spinal cord injury chartered new territory in the understanding of long-term adjustment, health and aging of people with disabilities. Her most recent scholarly contribution, as co-author with Carolyn Vash in the second edition of the Psychology of Disability, is an invaluable resource and text in rehabilitation education and disability studies in the United States and throughout the world. Although Nancy officially retired in 2004 after 17 years of service at Michigan State University and additional 16 years of service at the University of Minnesota, she continued to contribute to the rehabilitation counseling profession as a consultant, author, teacher and mentor. Nancy was the embodiment of leadership with grace. Her balance of gentleness and strength inspired a commitment to individual excellence and a feeling of community for students and colleagues alike. She will be greatly missed. She is survived by her daughter, Laurel (Bill) Cibik; grandchildren, Ruby and Elise; sister, Jan (Don) Johnson; brother, John (Grace) Moe; and sister-in-law and BFF, Betty Pond. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 11, 10:30 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church of Okemos, 2258 Bennett Road, Okemos, MI 48864. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Okemos, in memory of Nancy Crewe. On line condolences may be made at: www.gorslineruncimaneastlansing.com

I knew Nancy as a fellow artist and grandmother. Her own creativity and support of other artists was a special inspiration to me when I needed it the most. I will never forget her.

Nancy was a dear friend, mentor and colleague. She was a gentle giant in the Rehabilitation Psych field. Her gentleness and interest in you as a individual led many of us to be better persons let alone better at our chosen careers. Her love for Laurel, Jack and other family were examples for us all. I will miss her. Thoughts and prayers are sent to Laurel and family.

Most rehabilitation educators are familiar with Nancy's scholarly contributions to improving the quality of life of persons with disabilities. But, for me personally, what stands out is the kindness and sensitivity that she demonstrated with everyone she interacted with. I loved her laugh and I appreciated the way that she affirmed others. For someone who made so many significant contributions to the rehabilitation field, it would have been very easy to develop a large ego. Nancy never had one. I will miss her. My sympathies to Laurel, Betty and the rest of Nancy's family.

Nancy Crewe was a great asset to our Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She personally mentored many of us including me on caring for disabled patients and research. Her dignity and ability to clarify and solve conflicts with a smile was superb. She has left many clinicians and patients better off.

I was a fellow CACIL board member with Nancy for years. I never met a more loving and gracious person, and yet she was tenacious when it came to advocating for people with disabilities. Her contributions to the independent living movement are something that people with disabilities have and will continue to benefit from for years. Thank you Nancy for your years of dedication. You will be greatly missed.

What a loss to all of us! Nancy was a true mentor and incredible lady. She touched the lives of so many and will always be an inspiration to me. She guided me, smiled and expected no less than excellance. She loved her family, community and exemplified humantiy, kindness, strength and wisdom. To me she was a role model, mentor and incredible human being. My deepest sympathy to all of her family and loved ones.
