William Clark Obituary

William G. "Bill" Clark

Marion - William G. "Bill" Clark, age 88, of Marion, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 8, 2021, at his home in the Kingston Residence following an extended illness.

On November 15, 1932, Bill was born in Spencer, West Virginia, the older of two sons of the late George Elmer and Margaret Ruth (Reynolds) Clark. He was raised in Parkersburg, West Virginia, where he graduated from Parkersburg High School in the class of 1951.

During school, Bill shared many classes with Shirley Bush, unaware at the time that he would share the rest of his life with her. They were married on October 9, 1954, and shared sixty six loving years of marriage. Together they raised five children: Jeffrey, William Brian, David Scott, Greg, and Laura.

Bill spent the majority of his working career with the General Telephone Company, starting in Martinsville, Ohio. The job took him to Jackson and Athens, Ohio before, in 1968, Bill was transferred to their offices in Marion, Ohio, where he and his family made their home. He worked his way up to being their switching services manager, officially retiring in 1989.

He was a licensed ham radio operator, call sign KB8SL, and was an active member of the Marion Amateur Radio Club, and the Telephone Pioneers Association.

A skilled craftsman, with an eye for even the smallest details, one of Bill's favorite hobbies was woodworking. He enjoyed making all manner of cabinets, including building all of the kitchen cabinets for one of their homes. He also assisted his kids with home improvement projects and passed on his attention to detail. After retirement he took up the challenging hobby of metal working and restored a couple of older metal lathes. He created much of the tooling needed for those machines. He had a workshop that was the envy of many.

Family vacations were often spent at one of Bill's favorite locations, Topsail Beach in North Carolina. He also loved to golf, always finding a place to golf wherever they traveled, and he was an avid reader.

Bill was a perfectionist, with a quiet demeanor, never quitting until the job was done and done right. He was very methodical in his planning and was always willing to share why he chose the direction he took.

Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Shirley Clark; five children: Jeffrey (Tina) Clark, William Brian (Jeaneane) Clark, David Scott Clark, Greg (Rita) Clark, and Laura (Dan) Day; 10 grandchildren: Erin Baldwin, Patrick Clark, Samantha Clark, William Andrew Clark, Sara Oliver, Christopher Clark, Timothy Clark, Brandon Day, Ashley Day, and Jillian Day; 12 great-grandchildren with two more expected any day; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Including his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brother, James Clark; and sister-in-law, Tomiko Clark.

His family will greet friends from noon - 2 pm on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, at the Snyder Funeral Homes, DENZER Chapel, 360 E. Center St., Marion. Services honoring his life will follow there at 2 pm, with Rev. Mark Schuring officiating. Masks are required for those in attendance. Burial will follow in Marion Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Emanuel Lutheran Church, 241 S. Prospect St., Marion, OH 43302, or Capital City Hospice, 2800 Corporate Exchange Dr #170, Columbus, OH 43231.

On behalf of his family, they want to extend a heartfelt "Thank you" to the staff at Kingston, who cared for Bill like family and Capital City Hospice for the comfort and care they provided in his final days.

I first met Bill in Athens, Ohio, working with him at GTE. When He moved to Marion, my father worked with him. Bill was always a pleasure to work with, very knowledgeable and kind.

What a nice man he was, so calm and a true gentleman. I enjoyed talking with him and Shirley when I worked at Kingston. I'll be praying for the family during difficult time.

I worked with, around or for Bill for probably 15 years. He was instrumental in my further opportunities transferring to North Carolina prior to my retirement in Myrtle Beach area. I also sold him (great deal) my rotary drill press to add to his work shop. I missed him when I left Marion and even more so now...rest in piece Bill you deserve it.
