Bryan Butler Obituary

Bryan William Butler
Sept. 27, 1949 - Oct.1, 2018
Resident of San Jose
Bryan Butler passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at his home in San José, California, on October 1, 2018. Bryan was born in Hinsdale, Illinois in 1949. He received a B.S. degree from Swarthmore College, an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago and a J.D. from the University of San Diego. His career included positions with leading technology innovators including IBM for that last 15 years. He was a respected leader in patent law, teaching at Lincoln Law School and authoring a treatise on patent damages. In addition, he delved deeply into interests including photography, sailing, skiing, scuba, tennis, golf, history, philosophy, theater, and music.
Bryan is survived by his wife Robin Sacolick, his sons Will and Jerry Butler, his brother Bruce Butler and his family, his mother-in-law Janet Kunert Christman, and many siblings-in-law, nephews and nieces. Bryan was preceded in death by his father William Sanford Butler in 1973 and his mother Dawne Hope Catlos Butler in 2011.
Bryan's exuberance, wit, curiosity, generosity, and loving kindness are greatly missed by his family, his professional colleagues, the Bay Area sonero community, El Mosquito performing group, and a broad network of social, professional, and community relationships. His life will be remembered and celebrated at several events, including a Celebration of Life gathering in the coming months.
We bid him fare thee well on the path for his steps alone, leading to a grand fandango where all are welcome. Contributions, if desired, may be made to Doctors Without Borders.
