Marko Trapani Obituary

Marko J. Trapani, Sr.

Resident of Los Gatos

May 27, 1937 - June 28, 2010

Marko John Trapani, Sr. - visionary entrepreneur; devoted husband, father and grandfather; mentor and friend to every person whose life he touched (and there are many) - died on Monday, June 28, 2010, leaving a legacy of love, generosity, vision and integrity that will live on forever.

The third son of Joseph and Eleanor Trapani, Marko was born and raised in the Willow Glen area of San Jose. He attended Bellarmine Prep School and Willow Glen High School, where he lettered in basketball and graduated at age 16.

By the time he was 20 years old, Marko had already worked - and excelled - in a variety of fields, from the once-ubiquitous San Jose canneries to the insurance industry (more on that later) to the bowling business (managing Saratoga Lanes, facilitating the opening of Futurama Bowl in San Jose and - most importantly - bowling two perfect games). Marko also served his country for two years, as a Military Policeman in the United States National Guard.

Marko met his wife of 49 years, Marlene (Taormina) Trapani, in 1956, when, as Marlene lovingly recalls, her date to a Willow Glen High School dance insisted that Marlene join him in a line of students waiting to shake charismatic young Marko's hand. Marko and his bride were married in 1961.

Marko returned to the insurance business in the early 1960s, first as a founding partner in two insurance agencies - Longwello, Miller & Trapani and Edwards, Longwello & Trapani, - and, later, as a worldwide sales leader and top-producing life-insurance agent for Great Southern Life Insurance. Marko's sales success boiled down to a simple philosophy: find out what people want and help them get it. Armed with this ethos, Marko was Great Southern's top salesman in the nation three years in a row; Marko sold one prominent businessman a $10 million dollar life insurance policy - the largest of its kind at the time.

Having conquered the world of insurance, Marko set his sights on a new frontier in the 1970s: the cardroom business. Marko's initial ventures included the Miracle Mile Casino in San Jose, the Comstock Club in Santa Clara and the Cameo Club in Palo Alto, where Marko and his compatriots took the lead in popularizing no-limit Texas Hold 'Em.

Marko realized a life-long dream in the early 1990s, when he joined forces with the Bumb family in creating San Jose's own Bay 101 Club - one of the two remaining cardrooms in the city. With the Bay 101, Marko achieved another professional milestone by creating The Shooting Star Tournament, which continues to draw the world's best players and is part of the celebrated World Poker Tour (WPT). Marko himself participated in the World Series of Poker, even finishing in the top 50 in the mid-1990s (ahead of several top players, he would add). Numerous all-time poker greats, many of whom are among Marko's dearest friends, have called Marko "the greatest cardroom owner/operator in the business."

Ultimately, Marko would say that all of his accomplishments and accolades would mean nothing without the one true passion in his life: his family. Marko reveled in quality time with the people he loved; whether he was casting a fishing pole with his sons, brothers and friends, trading stock from the leather armchair in his office, or dealing up a spontaneous game of Texas Hold 'Em with his children and grandchildren, Marko lived life fully, joyously - and with a big dose of humor. One of Marko's favorite pastimes was making people laugh. His keen wit and infectious personality were like a magnet, drawing people of all ages to his side.

Marko is survived by his beloved wife, Marlene; his four sons, David, Marko, Jr., Christopher and Andrew, of whom he could not be more proud; his brothers, Andrew and Joseph; his daughters-in-law, Teresa, Tammy and Kirsten, whom he loved as his own; and eleven beautiful grand children - Michael, Danielle, Kyle, Gabriella, A.J., Rocco, Marko III, Nik, Paul, Marissa and Lexi - to whom Marko was the joke-cracking, twinkle-eyed, candy-dispensing, big-hearted, adoring grandfather known, simply, as "Pop."

Please join us to celebrate Marko's life at the Saratoga Federated Church 14370 Saratoga Avenue Saratoga, CA 95070 on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m.

It was the best of times, albeit brief alas! To witness greatness, generosity, wit, smarts, loyalty, bravery and confidence, all in one man and at a close distant. In my heart and on my mind always dude!

my good friend, my boss Marko,
Here we are, years later, I learn of your passing. Deepest condolences to the entire Trapani family. It was an honor and a privilege working for you, for Bay 101 poker room as a prop. You gave great lessons in poker and in life.
My husband, Rome, and I will always remember you for your kindness, your wit and your funny remarks. RIP my friend.

Hi boss,
Just had an open heart surgery. Just like every milestone, one of the first things crossing my mind was what you would say and somehow find humor in all this. You´re with me everyday sweet prince and I miss you terribly. Sorry, but due to successful surgery we have to delay our planned reunion a little bit!!

Love you today and always Pop. I miss you so much and know you're smiling down on me and all the grandkids at what we've been accomplishing. Everything I do, I think of what you would've done or said. It still feels like you're still here because of the legacy you left behind that will always live on. I miss your laugh, your teasing, and the one time you told me you were proud of me and I knew I had achieved greatness. I love you Pops. I know you're holding aces up there. xoxo Gab

Truly a great person. Touched the lives of so many with his humor and generosity. He donated to our animal welfare fund that provided care for homeless animals that would have otherwise been euthanized. He had a great devotion to his wife and family. His stories about his sons and sneaking the dogs into their rooms at night will always make me smile.

The day that you left, the world outside became a little less passionate and compassionate. A little less giving and forgiving. A little less humorous and witty. A little less creative and imaginative. But inside, I became stronger, wiser, kinder and braver by carrying you in my heart.
You took this naïvely sentimental and idealist "armchair intellectual" and turned him into a card room operator, and showed, yet again, your great heart and your extraordinary mind. Every time that I get a compliment or a positive remark at work, I thank you and value my time with you even more. I KNOW that Lord is really enjoying your company up there and I KNOW you are putting a good word in for me. Every day that passes by, it becomes more and more apparent to me what a great man you were and the huge impact and influence you had in my life. Save a seat up there for me, will you?

December 14, 2010

I had the pleasure of getting to know Marko while working the floor at the Miracle Mile back in the era of Jim Dailey, Bob Kemp, Jack Andrade, Rich & Debbie Rogers, Roy Goodenough (aka chromedome) and Neil Rovai. I found a car I really wanted but didn't have enough cash and asked Marko. He took me into his little office by the cage, told me he had a lot of people working for him and he couldn't be doing this sort of thing for everyone, but then said he was happy with my job performance and would front me the money (I recall it being $500. and he wanted at least $50 per week until paid). I got lucky at the track and paid him in full on the third week. Working 5 nights a week, I was very aware of fellow employee and customer sentiments and I NEVER EVER heard a bad word about this gentleman. He was truly a prince and is very likely driving around heaven in his Stutz Blackhawk with the "Marko T" license plate.

My friend. Thinking of you today. Time has not eased the grief or my tears. I still feel your presence. (ss)

September 29, 2010

Marko, (ss) it has been three months since your passing and there is not a day that ends that I don't hear your voice and smile at an off the wall comment or remark you would make and I would laugh. I know that you are smiling down at us - but since I know you the smile is probably from your holding "Aces high" in heaven. Always

Marlene, Jo-Jo and Andy
Since the forth grade there was me and Marko and Al Cordoni, and then there was Rich Caravelli, and Sammy LaRocca, and Dick Peters that would hang out together. I remember the big two story house at the corner of Lincoln and Minnesota where the Trapani's lived, Eleanor and Joe and the boys, which was two blocks from where I lived on California St. with my parents and my sister Carol. We called him “Murph – I don't know why, we just did. Marko and I did know each other from the fourth grade at Willow Glen Elementary School, to Edwin Markham Jr. High School and Willow Glen High School. In the summers of those early years we picked prunes together in orchards around the valley and worked the canneries summer times. I remember one summer he learned that he was anemic and spent time in bed for several weeks recovering…and playing cards, which I suppose was the start of something. We played basketball together at Willow Glen High and in the ‘51-‘52 and ‘52-‘53 seasons were undefeated in 45 games over those two years. If you would like to know what high school basket ball looked like back then watch the movie “Hoosiers – it us right down to the school colors and the red and gold uniforms. Of course, Marko was the hot shooter and usually high scorer…mostly because he took the shoots…or you might say the opportunities. Summers we spent all the time we could at Club Almaden, swimming and stuff, which were fun, carefree days. We served together in the 49th Military Police Co, California National Guard and spent a couple of summer camps at Camp Roberts with a bunch of guys you'd remember if I could remember those names, sorry I can't. They were good days in a simpler time.
As I recall, the last time I saw Marko was at our 20th Willow Glen High reunion. We spent time laughing and talking about “the old days as guys do. It was good to reminisce. I'm sorry for your loss. He was my good friend and I will miss him.
I'm at [email protected] or (415) 897-8206.

Marlene and Family,
Marko always impressed me as someone who made life look easy. From getting tips on bowling, to selling, to getting back up again after a setback, Marko was helpful to me. He enjoyed life, even to point of relishing his passing in 2010! But I am most impressed with the number 49! May our Lord grant him peace.
