Amanda Belle Freeman Pike Ransleben Cowan was born in McCamey TX July 14, 1938 and died Wednesday August 4, 2021 age 83 years and 21 days.
From humble beginnings in a west Texas oilfield camp, she graduated from high school at age 16 and went to Texas Technological College on a scholarship that her father swore should have been given to a deserving boy. She gave birth to her first child Elaine Pike Wooster just a month before turning 19 years old. Her second child, another girl, was born 5 years later – Liesa Karen Ransleben. Although she tried being a stay at home mom, her drive to succeed was great. Amanda received her CPA license and began the fight for equality long before we even knew we needed to fight. Amanda's final child Erich Bruce Ransleben was born in 1967. Mrs. Cowan received her Master's degree in Liberal Arts from Houston Baptist University.
Please don't think from the educational achievements that she was all work and no play. Mother was an avid Houston Oiler fan during the Luv Ya Blue era with her own set of season tickets on the 47 yard line behind the home team bench in the red seats at the Astrodome. Our neighbors on Queensbury knew that the yelling coming from our house on Sunday afternoon during away games was "just Mrs. Ransleben watching the Oilers".
Mrs. Cowan was preceded in death by her father Odie Cage Freeman, her mother Ritta Curl Freeman, her Aunt Ruby Rosenow, her husband Jimmy Dale Cowan and her brother James Freeman. She is survived by all three children, her grandkids Larsen and Lauren Ransleben, her sister in law Darlyne Freeman and her dear and caring friend Jayne Ann Miller.
The family gratefully acknowledges the attentive care and concern Mother received at Cinco Ranch Alzheimer's Special Care Center.
