BARRY CODY Obituary

BARRY GARLOW
CODY, 65

WINTER HAVEN - Barry Garlow Cody, 65, died Thursday, February 14th, 2013 in a plane crash. He was returning from the Bahamas with brother Kit Cody and friend Rob Krieger when the plane crashed between Sebastian and Bartow in Indian River County, Florida near the Fort Drum Conservation Area.
Barry was born on February 25, 1947 in Cody, Wyoming. He eventually moved with his family to Winter Haven, FL. He ran track at Winter Haven High School and was awarded an athletic scholarship upon graduation in 1965 to attend Arkansas State University. At ASU he received a BS in Education in 1972. He later received a Master Degree from Webster University in St. Louis.
Barry was married to Catherine Keith in 1972 and had two children, Kyle and Paul. They lived in Poplar Bluff, MO where he taught physical education and coached track, cross country, and swimming at Poplar Bluff High School. Barry retired from teaching in 1999 but continued to coach sports until 2003. Barry was an exemplary coach with a winning record. He was dedicated to his athletes and students both on and off the field. Many youth considered him a role model while he treated his athletes like his children. Barry was also a former youth director at the First United Methodist Church in Poplar Bluff.
Barry was an avid outdoorsman enjoying downhill skiing, white water rafting, fishing, golfing, tennis, swimming, and boating. He loved traveling to Wyoming and sharing his passion for the west with his friends and family. In 1967 Barry and Kit founded Shoshone River float, the first ever "You Paddle" raft trip and the largest volume white water experience of the time.
He was preceded in death by his parents Dorothy and William J., and his brother John "Jack" Garlow. He is survived by sons Kyle (Jill) and Paul Cody, brother William Garlow, grandchildren Trevor, Judah, Samuel, and Nika, nieces, nephews, and many friends and students.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 22, 2013 at Ott-Laughlin Funeral Home in Winter Haven, Florida in conjunction with brother Kit Cody.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to an athletic scholarship fund that has been set up at Poplar Bluff High School.

Coach Cody understood it wasn't necessarily about "sports". It was about living.. striving.. and believing that one could achieve beyond his or her expectations. I have thought of him often over the years and feel lucky to have known him.

I ran track and cross country for coach Cody. He was a great man. He treated all of us like his kids. He bought me running shoes when I couldn't afford them. He took me to tryout for college so that I could get a scholarship. He is greatly missed. Love you coach. Hope to see you in heaven one day.

My name is Joan Rae Johnson, daughter of Jane Cody Garlow. Barry and I are First Cousins. In 2008 Barry and I had a wonderful time together in Cody Wyoming during our family reunion. We share the same Grandparents Fred and Irma Garlow, and the same Great Grandparents, William F. and Louisa Cody. Barry and I share the same love for God and the love of teaching and the experience of working with children and youth in the church. I plan to spend all of eternity with Barry. I will continue to pray for your family and loved ones....Until that day, Love Cousin Joanie
