CHARLES DEANER Obituary

CHARLES DEANER Charles "Chuck" Deaner, a 65-year resident of Las Vegas, passed away Feb. 3, 2017. Chuck was born Nov. 16, 1922 in Erie, Pa. to Charles and Mary Deaner. Following high school graduation Chuck joined the 9th U. S. Army Air Corps serving during World War II in Europe. Grateful for the GI Bill, Chuck received a bachelor's degree from Gannon College, Erie, followed by a juris doctor degree from Syracuse University, Syracuse, N.Y. Coming to Las Vegas in 1952, Chuck was admitted to the Nevada State Bar in 1953. His first law office was upstairs in the Cornet Building on Fremont Street. Ultimately Chuck and his partners built the Deaner Law Building on 4th and Gass. Beginning in general law, he specialized in real property law as the community experienced rapid growth. His textbook on real estate law was widely used by the legal community and the board of realtors signifying his unparalleled expertise in this field. His counsel was widely sought by his peers. His passion for teaching and his love of the law was evidenced through numerous courses that he taught at University of Nevada-Las Vegas and other venues. The pre-law program at Gannon University is named in Chuck's honor. Chuck was a member of the Nevada State Bar for 63 years, a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and active in the Nevada Law Foundation. Chuck had a wide variety of interests as evidenced by his 26 years of service on the District Board of Health of Clark County, his lengthy activity as a Boy Scout leader, and his service with the Clark County Legal Aid Society. He was a Shriner and active in the Kiwanis club. Wealth didn't interest Chuck much, he knew he was rich when he was with his family or while watching the 51's play baseball at Cashman Field, sipping a cold beer or hopping on a trainany train. He was a walking encyclopedia of train tables, baseball facts and Abraham Lincoln. Chuck had an extraordinary mind and a wonderful heart. He practiced law during the early years when everyone knew everyone, watching out for each other and working together to develop a strong community. He was a practicing lawyer until his death at 94, ending with the firm of Deaner, Malan, Larsen & Ciulla. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; his siblings, Stuard, Harriet and George; his son and law partner, Doug and his wife, Lucy. Chuck is survived by his wife, Susan; his sister, Edna Mae; his daughter-in-law, Nancy; and four grandchildren, Julia, Richard, Kathryn and Lisa; plus eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces; and nephews. Celebration of life service will be from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Palm Mortuary, 7600 S. Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89123. Funeral Mass is at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at Our Lady of Las Vegas Church, 3050 Alta Drive, Las Vegas, NV 89107, followed by reception at the Spanish Oaks HOA Clubhouse.

Not sure what to say?

I first met Mr Deaner in the early 1970's and was very fortunate to have his late son Doug as my attorney. I continued to utilize Mr Deaner's firm over the past several decades. Chuck Deaner was and will continual to be one of the most authentic, honest, straight forward people that I have ever known. I enjoyed his humor, quick wit and down to earth personality. It is said "They broke the mold when someone was born" and in Chuck's case it is truly the case. God just don't make people very often like Mr. Deaner. I will miss our chats, his wisdom and counsel but will always feel like I was a better person for a short time, after spending whatever time I was in his presence. May you Rest in Peace as the world lost a true gentle man. God Bless!

Chuck became my father in law 37 years ago when I married his son Doug. He was always there through good and bad times with wise council, a steady hand and love. I admired so many things about him not the least of which were his political insights- he was the salt of the earth. I love you Chuck, may you rest in peace and eternal grace.

Chuck was my first boss - after Judge Mendoza- It was Deaner, Deaner & Reynolds in 1976. Chuck was a kind, wise and gentle soul. Never vain or pretentious, he loved the law, baseball and railroads. He lived modestly, bought his cars used from rental car companies, and never owned a showy house. I enjoyed sharing 50 cent shrimp cocktails at the Mint with him, as much as our Friday lunches at the Hualapai Club. As a young lawyer, whenever I hit an impasse researching a case, Chuck would stop doing whatever he was doing, take me into his wonderful library, (before computers) and spend way too much time helping me find the law. He had a great sense of humor and loved people. He was never mean or contrary, smiled often, and loved a fine cigar and a good beer. I last saw him at the funeral of Judge Susan Scann - his former partner. I will cherish fond memories of Chuck Deaner forever. Bob Apple

In the late '70's, as I was entering the field of escrow in Las Vegas, it was my immeasurable fortune to experience Chuck Deaner, the Law Professor, in a Real Estate Law class at UNLV. Later on, as an Escrow Officer, I was privileged to experience his availability and vast knowledge when seeking guidance with unusual transactions or to watch and listen to him guide his client through a real estate transaction. Forty years later I still hold him in the highest regard and thank him for his expertise, ethics and sense of humor. And no one could tell better attorney jokes! He is greatly missed.

You were by far the most interesting man I've ever met. Your stories captivated me as a child. I loved visiting with you when you came to visit. You were the coolest great uncle a gal could've asked for. You made everyone come together and smile. You were a special man. They don't make them like you anymore.

He was a wonderful man! I worked at Deaner & Deaner during my high school years back in the early 1980s as a Runner. They were located at the Valley Bank Plaza at that time. Mr. Deaner was always kind, funny and my Commander in the battle with the copy machine!

God Bless The Deaner family!

To my Uncle Chuckie
We did not get to spend much time with you due to the distance between our families, but you made a lasting impression on our lives . I personally thought you were the funniest lawyer I'd ever met. Thank you for the great summer memories in Erie Pa. , and for dancing with me in the kitchen . You will always be in my heart.
