Glenn Hopper Obituary

Glenn B. Hopper, USN (Retired), 86, of Memphis, died December 5, 2009 at Kirby Pines Nursing Home. Born April 12, 1923 in Obion County, TN was awarded a basketball scholarship to the University of Tennessee at Martin, where he also was starting center of that basketball team also lettering in football and track. During his Naval career, he served in the Asiatic-Pacific theatre during WWII aboard the CVE, U.S.S. Windham Bay, the U.S.S. Gearing DD-710 in the Sixth Fleet and was the Operation Officer and Executive Officer of HS-4 aboard the U.S.S. Yorktown, CVS-10. After retiring from the Navy, he worked for Chrysler Corporation and later the Board of Education for Memphis City Schools. Mr. Hopper was a Steward of Emmanuel United Methodist Church, 32nd Degree mason and Shriner of Al Chymia Lodge and the Troy Masonic Lodge. Mr. Hopper is survived by his wife, Dale Hogan Hopper, sons Glenn B. Hopper II of Sarasota, FL, Patrick Hopper and Dan Hopper, both of Memphis; daughter, Linda Hopper of Memphis; four grandchildren, Glenn B. Hopper III of Nashville, TN, Sonia Hopper Janovich, Cassandra Hopper and Trevor Hopper, all of Memphis; six great-grandchildren; brother, Leon Hopper of Oakland, TN; and sister, Evelyn Harper of Troy, TN. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 8 from 5-7 p.m. and funeral services will be Wednesday, December 9 beginning at 10a.m., all at Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel. Rev. Dear Dale; My deepest sympathy to you and the family on the passing of Glen. He was such a likeable, sweet man and the Pickett family enjoyed knowing him both in the Scenic Hills neighborhood and Church. Jan and Hunter send their condolances along with me.
