GUNNAR R. NIELSEN

Born near Kolding, Denmark, Gunnar immigrated with his parents and sister to the United States in 1948. He joined the United States Air Force in 1954, and was stationed in Greenland, then met and later married the love of his life, Martha Wood. Gunnar's innovative nature and industrious personality were valued with managerial positions at various companies in the San Joaquin Valley, including Petrolane, Brandt Manufacturing, River Rock Products, and Poultry Transport. As a farmer with an aptitude for engineering, his ingenuity led to multiple innovations. Gunnar proudly served the community as board member for Madison Elementary School and 4-H instructor. He was an active member of the Fresno Danish Dancers, Danish-American Historical Society, and Danish Society Dania. Gunnar enjoyed fishing, backpacking, traveling, dancing, and collecting old farm tractors. Gunnar was preceded in death by his sister, Eva Bay. He is survived and loved by his wife Martha; their children and spouses, Randy and Susan Nielsen of San Diego, CA, Dennis and Karen Nielsen of Berkeley, CA, and Renae and Gary Fish of Scotts Valley, CA; as well as six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He passed with his family present. Visitation will be held at Stephens and Bean Funeral Chapel on Friday, September 22, 2017, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at Hope Lutheran Church on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Dania Senior Assistance Fund; the Dania-Dannebrog Scholarship Fund, 487 Paradise Park, Santa Cruz, CA 95060; or to the charity of your choice.
