Jane McCray Obituary

MCCRAY, Jane Ann, passed peacefully into the hands of the Lord on January 29, 2021. She was

predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Bill D. McCray; her parents, Clyde and Faye Murrell; and her brother, Robert Murrell. Born on November 21, 1928, in Okmulgee, Okla., Jane lived a life full of family and friends. Her family attended the First Christian Church of Okmulgee, where she was baptized on November 6, 1938. Jane attended Oklahoma A&M University and met the love of her life, Bill McCray. She graduated with a B.A. in Journalism in 1950. As a child of the Depression Era, she was thankful for the sacrifices her family made for her to be able to attend college in the 1940s. After college, she and Bill were married in her parents' home on February 10, 1951, before moving to Houston, Texas and having four children. In 1967, Bill was recalled to active duty at the Dallas Naval Air Station and the family moved to Euless, Texas. Jane worked as a reporter for the local Mid-Cities Daily News and the HEB Chamber of Commerce. In 1978, they moved to Georgetown, Texas and Jane began working in the office of a state representative in the Texas Legislature. She was proud of her work for the Texas Committee on Investigating Child Abuse. After retiring in 1992, Jane and Bill enjoyed traveling and spending time with their children and grandchildren. In 2017, she moved to Richmond, Va. to be close to family in the area during her final years. She never lost her love for Texas, Oklahoma and her family. She kept generations of memories alive by gathering and maintaining a collection of family stories and photographs. Jane McCray is survived by her children, David McCray (Phyllis) of Henrico, Va., Greg McCray of Fairfax, Va., Doug McCray of Austin, Texas and Stephanie McCray of Pflugerville, Texas; her grandchildren, Kelly McCray (Cesare Paris) of Goochland, Va., Leah McCray of Richmond, Va., Lauren McCray (Paul Spadafora) of Seattle, Wash., J. C. McCray of Fairfax, Va., Daniel McCray (Valerie) of Fairfax, Va., Joanna, Kyle and William McCray of Austin, Texas; and great-grandchildren, Sofia, Bianca and Lucas. The family requests that anyone who wishes to remember Jane would help someone in need. Due to current health considerations, the memorial service will be held on a later date at the Liberty Hill Cemetery, Liberty Hill, Texas. Words of comfort may be shared with the family.
