Joan Voltz Obituary

It is a sad day Deer Park... Joan Maxine (Goodrich) Voltz passed away peacefully after a long, heroic battle with cancer on October 19, 2011 ~ a mere four days from her 81st birthday. She was born October 23, 1930 in Nashville, TN to Edna and James Goodrich. The Goodrich's soon divorced with Edna moving Joan and her older sister, Betty Jean, to Holloway, OH.

Joan graduated in 1948 from McKinley High School in Canton, OH. She and her sister Betty worked for Sealtest Creamery where Joan met her soon-to-be husband, Kenneth Ray Voltz of Louisville, OH. Ken and Joan were married February 9, 1952.

Ken and Joan had three children. Their first child, Candy Lee, was born on January 30, 1957, with their second child, Randy Ray, arriving on September 12, 1959. The last of the trio, Keith Allen, was born June 18, 1970 just a few years after the family had settled in Deer Park, TX.

Besides being a wife, mother and finally a granny to her lovely granddaughter, Ashleigh Rae, Joan's favorite past time was bowling. She bowled on a women's league in Pasadena for over twenty years scoring countless games of 160+. Bowling was her passion and she treasured all the lovely friendships she made throughout the years.

Joan had been a resident of Deer Park since 1968. She worked in the community for many years before finally starting her own daycare service from home. When cancer reared its ugly head in 2005, Joan had to cease taking care of kids in order to take care of her own health.

During her chemo sessions, her oncologist quickly recognized Joan's undaunting positive attitude and ability to "bring life into sometimes lifeless situations". So she began her new career as "morale officer of the chemo department". When a new patient came on board, Joan would meet with them to assure them that chemo was a "piece of cake".

Joan is survived by her sister Betty Lebo of Massillon, OH, her daughter Candy Pond of Benicia, CA, her sons Randy Voltz of Deer Park, TX and Keith Voltz of Spring, TX and her granddaughter Ashleigh Voltz of Mont Belvieu, TX.

Friends are invited to a visitation with the family at Grand View Funeral Home in Pasadena, TX on Sunday, October 23rd from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. A celebration of Joan's life will be held on Monday, October 24th at 3:00 pm at Grand View Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Joan's honor.
