Melton, John Theodore

John Theodore Melton died Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at his residence. He was born in Columbia, SC on December 26, 1941 to Martha Aldrich Tompkins Melton and John T. Melton.

John was educated in the Columbia public schools and graduated from the University of South Carolina. At 21, he moved to New York City and attended and graduated from the Parsons School of Design in 1966. He spent 20 years working in New York graphic design with several companies, including Bergdoff Goodman. He then worked with Joan Toggitt Limited, importing specialty needlework fabrics. During those years, he served on the Board of Directors and eventually became president of the National Needlework Association.

After a brain aneurism in 1980, he began his own business, Mill Hill Graphics in New York City. As the business grew, he relocated to North Carolina in the mid-80's. Working with two partners, he started MPR Associates, which specialized in needlework, crafts, cross stitch and "do it yourself" projects. In 2001, he sold the business and retired.

The year he retired, he immediately immersed himself in volunteer and philanthropic activities in Greensboro. Among the organizations that benefitted from his efforts were Guilford Green Foundation and Greenhill Center for NC Art. He also enjoyed travelling and making friends at the bridge table.

John is survived by his brother, Thomas McCreery Melton of Mt. Pleasant, SC.

A gathering with family and friends will be Friday, September 9, starting at 11:30 a.m. on the Terrace at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 607 North Greene Street.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
