John Webster Obituary

John Henry Webster
08/18/1944 - 03/31/2025
John (Jack) Henry Webster was born Aug. 18, 1944 in Pittsburgh, PA. and passed away March 31, 2025 in Palm Springs, CA.
"Seen a good movie lately?" is something Jack would ask you all the time. He loved movies, cinema and everything about Hollywood.
Jack was the son of Philip and Helen Webster and is survived by his three brothers Philip, Dennis and Rick.
Education includes, Wilkinsburg High School in Pittsburgh, PA. - 1962, Milligan University, B.A. degree (Johnson City, TN.) - 1966, and graduate work at the University of Michigan.
Career includes, English teacher at Grand Blanc High School, Grand Blanc, MI., Personnel administrator for Merrill Lynch of San Francisco, CA., University administrator for UCSF - assistant to the CIO (San Francisco, CA). Jack retired from the University of California in 2006.
Both in San Francisco and in Palm Springs, Jack raised very large amounts of money for the local AIDSwalk. He walked every year and during each walk, wore a special shirt covered in the names of friends he had lost to the disease. Jack was very proud of the money he raised both for the SF AIDS Foundation and the Desert AIDS project.
After retiring in 2006, Jack moved to Palm Springs, CA, where he developed many deep and rewarding friendships. He was a highly respected member of the film community and one of the "go to reviewers" for the Desert Film Society. By his count, over the course of ten years, he reviewed more than 700 movies for the Desert Film Society.
Jack was also devoted to maintaining his health and every day, rain or shine he walked three miles in Palm Springs - with seven routes that varied, by day.
Milestones and achievements in his life include he received a great education, worked very hard throughout life, owned his home, loved his very active retirement, he lived a happy and full life.
Jack's parting thoughts were, "Always give back and always be benevolent, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you", and "Support the arts!

I met Jack in 1979 in San Francisco. He was the "manager" of the apartment building we both lived in. An enduring friendship began, seeing each other weekly until I moved to NJ in 1984. He was a wonderful neighbor and friend and will be missed by many.
