Joyce Stevens Obituary

Joyce went home to be with Jesus on February 5th, 2026. She was born in Boston, MA, on February 18, 1932 to LeRoy Moore and Jennie Moore. She had one younger brother, Leroy Moore.

During her growing-up years, she moved to Connecticut, where she graduated from high school and went on to the Teachers College of Connecticut. There, she met Howard Stevens, her life-long husband and soulmate.

They eloped to the Midwest and had two sons. Howard's jobs took them from Ohio back to Connecticut, New Jersey, California, Indiana, and North Carolina. Later, they moved to Nevada. Between moves and raising her two sons, she continued her college work and earned her degree and a teaching certificate from California Polytechnic Institute in Pomona.

Joyce and Howard were married for over 60 years, and were active in sailboat racing and cruising, earning many trophies in local and international competitions. For eight years, they lived on their sailboat. They cruised from California south through Mexico, the Panama Canal, Colombia, the Bahamas, up the Intracoastal Waterway to Maine, stopping in many places in between.

Joyce was predeceased by Howard and is survived by her two sons, Russell Stevens of Salisbury, NC, and Roger Stevens of Sparks, NV, 5 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3:00 pm, February 14, 2026, at Back Creek Presbyterian Church, 2145 Back Creek Church Road, Mount Ulla, NC 28125, with visitation after the service. Another service will be held in the summer at Joyce's home church in Gardnerville, NV.
