I'm sorry to learn of Karl's passing on this late date, 1/20/2022. As a freelance photographer working for the UAW publications dept., I worked with Karl many times on articles assigned. I appreciated his skills as a writer and abilities as interviewer. He gave me the feeling that he was listening to my ideas on the job. His long time interest in photography assured me that he knew what I was doing. I miss his sense of humor. He was an avid camera collector - I bought my Leica from him. I also acquired a young kitten from his cat's litter. So I send my condolences to Melanie and family. And I thank Karl for his friendship.

Karl was there in the night office of the Associated Press when I showed up from St. Louis. It was the spring of 1968 and the deadly Detroit riot of the previous summer was on our minds. Tense times like now. Karl was a fearless reporter who was up to any challenge. I believe he was the author of the cryptic note pinned to the lunch room bulletin board: "Want to be a writer? Get a typewriter." His good nature and hearty laugh will always stay with me. There's so much to say about this good man, this good friend. If we have just a few like him in our lifetimes, we are truly blessed. And so I am.

On behalf of the Capuchin brothers, I offer my deepest sympathies on the passing of Karl. It is truly humbling to receive memorial donations in honor of Karl's life. Please be assured of the brother's prayers for the entire Mantyla family during this great time of grief. May perpetual light shine upon Karl.
